    Turn off printer

Is there any pros or cons to routinely turning off a printer when it isn't going to be used for 7+ days?
I have a Epson WF-2850 all in one printer. It works fine, but uses ink quickly. It does seem to take a bit of time to turn on, makes a few noises, etc.

If you have an Epson inkjet printer the heads will dry out and they aren't replacable. You will have to buy a new printer. If you leave it in sleep mode it will purge the heads from time to time but yes it wastes ink. With those printers you really are supposed to use all the colors once or twice a week at least so they don't lock up the heads.

How about those ecotank printers? I hate buying inkjet printers over and over.

Same deal. I have a couple of those my wife uses for dye sublimination (you can put other inks into those other than Epson inks). They still dry out and lock up the heads if you don't use them regularly.

Well that sucks. Any idea of a decent printer that doesn't get used much, but when it does I want it too work.

Look into laser printers. They are a lot cheaper than they used to be. Either that or inkjets that replace the heads along with the ink like HP or I think Canon does as well.

Epsons print nice, and they have a technology that allows for use of specialty inks like sublimination, but their non replacible heads suck. They do it on purpose because it helps them sell more printers. Its been that way for 30 years with them...

Laser cost barely more than a full-sized toner cartridge. It's because you only get a "sampler" sized cartridge with the printer. The printers wear ou and break before you spend a fortune on toner. My last one worked for 9 years and 3 toner cartridges. I used to print a crapload, but in recent years slowed down. I saved a ton of money on paper by printing on both sides.

Should have auto turn off if you can configure. My HP 1606 black ink cartridge $99 that goes empty after 8-9 months. Lower the DPI from 1200 to 300 if you can to save ink on your model.

Depends on the model and where you get your toner but yeah in the long run they are significantly cheaper. If you aren't printing photos they are great. The new stuff even does ok on photos. Not Epson quality photo paper good, but ok for a lot of stuff.

I will never own an inkjet printer again. They are money pits and maintenance nightmares. I had an Epson for printing photos up to 13 inches wide. It had 8 ink carts that held 10ml and each cost about $15. The heads would clog easily, and I wasted a crap ton of ink running cleaning cycles. At one time I was printing 4-5 large prints per day. It was an ongoing nightmare.

While I no longer print color, I would buy a laser printer if I did. I have a fairly cheap HP laser (black only) that works great. It has a standby mode. It works great for everyday document printing.

I have an HP Laser Jet Pro MFP M281cdw. I have never turned it off in a very long time, 8~ years. Does what I need it to do when I needed it.
