    DefCon 20

Just wondering if anyone here is going to DefCon 20.

It's only a couple of months away (July 26-29).

I thought about going this year but decided to get a new car instead. DefCon is not what is used to be anymore anyways, way too commercialized and mainstream now. Just hasn't been the same since it left the Alexis Park.

The Riv sucked bad, but at the Rio we are back to people sitting in the hallways with their laptops. Good memories.

What are you, a Defcon hipster?

I'm going. Skipped last year, but I'll definitely be there this year.

I heard they're still shaking the parties down for money, not cool.

Nope, just don't want to deal with any of the crap that has been pulled on attendees since the con left the AP.

Yeah. It's definitely not the same...it's grown way too big.

Still...it's a lot of fun and they've got a lot of interesting talks.

My Defcon pics are at hackerphotos.com , the site is under maintenance, sorry about the nav issues.

Well, they did book Crystal Method to play at the Black & White Ball (Sat night).

Unions what their cut of the action. Hence mandatory fees for "corkage" for trying to throw your own party at their venue.

That and other stuff are things you have to deal with when having a convention at a venue that is regulated by the Nevada Gaming Control Board (Caesars/Riv/Rio) and one that is not (AP).

More than just corkage. For instance, Barkode got shaken down for something like $10k, that he was told to give to them in a paper bag, in a back hallway with no cameras. The casino then went in and stole the tips from the bartenders that were working for free. That's a big part of the reason the Ninja Party was canceled for a while. Well that and the casino changing the fees at the last minute. More mafia than union stuff was going on.

I'm embarrassed to say I've actually never attended.. Now that I live so close I think I just might this year.

I went last year and loved it. The DefCon Shoot was a ton of fun as well. Decided to buy a house this year so I dont have the cash to make it.
