But like Vaxx, my question is "If your updates fix security on your PCs, and the "updates" work, why do you worry about me not getting updates?"

Microsoft is working very hard to move users to the cloud. Not just storage and backups, but almost all of their software. Eventually, it will be impossible to run most software without an internet connection. This is an industry wide initiative to move everything online, making your devices little more than consoles.
