I have a laptop stuck in "update/reboot" purgatory

It's just grinding away, saying "Getting Windows ready. Don't turn off your computer".

In the past it's never been stuck there for more than 15 minutes, this time it's been a half hour. How long before I just yank the plug and try to re-load the C drive?
