Why aren't more people ditching Microsoft and instead running, say, GNU/Linux?

With Windows (and not with linux), people can stumble through and figure out how to do something without assistance (googling/etc). Turns out that particular benefit is worth more to most people than all of the productivity, security, and economic gains by switching to linux.

The proof of this is with Libre Office: it's a friggin free version of Office that's been around for decades that absolutely nobody wants to use. Similar: Google Docs/Sheets.

Doesn't help that "linux people" are willing to die on so many hills that products end up splitting into many factions (not just linux, but also BSD, Open Office/Libre Office, vi/emacs, etc).

Unkown to me my neighbor across the road ditched her lifetime of Wintel laptop stuff for a Macbook Neo and, so far, she loves it.

Just as she's doing that, I'm ditching 35 years of MacOS for my business and personal life for Linux for criticial CAD/CAM, and on American manufactured equipment.

Why? MacOS has gone big brother too and they're lifing out my old gear making it essentially unusable except to run Linux on. I won't be having Apple Intelligence recording my keystrokes any more than having big brother watching what I'm making on the machine tools. In the old days it was a Mac with a Wintel PCI card running AutoCAD and the CAM programs for the machines. Now it'll be Linux.

Why aren't more people running Linux? IDK. Herd mentality probably. Back when smart phones came out, seemed like everyone was buying iPhones. I got an Adroid phone from Motorola. Never been much with herd stuff. Probably why I became my own boss mid-20's. Jeez, that was a lifetime ago.

Anyway, not a rocket scientist nor a Linux guru, just an old guy who's had computers around since the old Wang VS100 in college.

libre office is not a free version of office and maybe look here:

LibreOffice 26.8 became the app’s most popular update, with over 1 million downloads, after the foundation behind it declared that LibreOffice doesn’t come with generative AI features due to the…
