gigabit switch actually goes over gigabit speed on speedtest?

i tested via ethernet the kid's gaming pc that has a 2.5gb port. connection goes to wall port via cat6 ethernet, then over cat6 ethernet cable under home, and then out to another wall port in another room. from the port, cat6 patch cable to a d-link 8port unmanaged gigabit switch. switch connects to router that has 2.5gb port via short cat6 patch cable . when i do a speedtest via speedtest.net or even xfinity speedtest, he's getting 1500-1800mpbs on avg give or take.

i bought a couple of 2.5gb switches thinking i'll need to change but it looks like i can just return them unopened. is there a 802.11x version for gigabit switches that would allow them to go over gigabit speed? i was surprised. my modem supports 2.5gb speed and so does the router.

Do not use speed test.net. It lies. I’ve proven it a million times to one of our network guy who likes to use it to “prove” his settings are good. Speedtest.net always shows ridiculously high speeds. Simple google “ speed test” and run the one that google provides. Speedtest.net will show 800meg and the google test shows 30meg. When you have users complaining their CAD models are loading at a snails pace which is more accurate? Also google speed test.net lies and you will see a bunch of other people drawing the same conclusion.

Also, to get that 2.5 gig switch to work correctly there are a few windows settings you need to tweak. I don’t recall what they are off the top of my head.

thanks for the insight on speedtest. i do see it go faster than say xfininty speedtest. since when complaining to comcast, they'll prefer i share data based on their own speedtest.

re: switch, my question was probably confusing. i did not install the unmanaged 2.5gb switch yet. i have a regular unmanaged d-link gigabit switch right now and oddly, speedtest goes over 1gb speed even when using comcast. just strange as i thought the d-link gigabit unmanaged switch would be choking the speed to its limits of 1gb only.

I dont think you're seeing what you think you're seeing. Its probably speedtest lying and testing the link between them and comcast, not them and your computer. A 1gig switch will usually yield about 900meg throughput after overhead depending on what transports and protocols you are using.
