I need to replace my current PC tower and wanted to ask how serious an issue the loss of Windows 10 support in 6 months would be for a casual home computer. I ran Windows 7 for a long time after the loss of updates with no issues and I hear that MS will offer Windows 10 updates at a price after the support window closes

Unless there is something major you won't get any security updates or anything. As long as you can still get drivers for that machine you should be fine. Hell they still push out XP patches from time to time if the threat is bad enough.vindicta inducit ad salutem? -
I highly suggest you move to another OS if you do not want win11. Windows not patched is like having sex with multiple hookers without a condom. You just do not do it!Comment

Depends what your use case is. If its not connected to a network who cares. We still run some ancient XP machines connected to robots.vindicta inducit ad salutem?Comment

Support ends this time next year, so about 12 months, not 6. FWIW.

OP, why don’t you want to update to Win 11? Machine too old or just don’t want to ? I have to say I don’t at all get hanging on to an old machine anymore except I supposed on principal. You can buy laptops or desktops on sale that are quite decent for $300-500 almost any time. They’d last you another 4-5 or more years no issues. That’s not so much $ anymore. Gone are
the days that you’d have a to spend at least $1000 or more to get a decent basic machine.
as for the suggestion above to replace Win 10
with some sort of Linux distribution, that I agree with if you are planning to be on the internet at all. I’ve installed mint, Ubuntu and chromium at one point or another and once you get used to them they are as good as windows for the basic stuff you’d still be using an older machine.
However, I’d still spend $300-500 and wait for a good sale on a decent new laptop. Just my 2 cents.Last edited by Iknownot; 10-20-2024, 8:43 PM.Comment
