DSL modem/router frequently restarts when more than 2 computers connected?

My DSL modem (gateway 2wire) is becoming cantankerous. When one computer is online it is generally fine but when I try to connect my laptop to it the modem will disconnect from the internet and reboot. Oddly it seems to do it far more often when my laptop is connected via wifi than when it is just the desktop via cable connection.

    Thoughts?

i would see if there is a firmware update available, if not i would ask your provider to send you a new one.

Contact your internet service provider. I'm sure they can replace it. I got them to give me a plain jane modem and I bought my own wireless router. Works way better than that two wire.

Are you plugging the devices directly in to the modem ("one ethernet port DSL modem"), or do you have a router between the computers and the DSL modem?

Do an "ipconfig" from a command prompt (no quotes) and let us know what your IP is then we can proceed after we see if you are direct connected, or NAT'ed. (192.168.x.y, or 172.245.x.y etc.)

Call AT&T, they'll replace it. You can try a hard reset too (recessed pin on back, hold in while powered off).

I did a hard reset and changed the transmit signal and it seems to be fine now.

A new one is on the way regardless.

3 years old I didn't think it would last that long...

Why wouldn't it? Routers, switches, and wireless access points last a very long time. I have a close to 10 year old WRT54GS that still works as good as new.

Just ask your internet provider for a new modem/router. I went through 2x 2wire router before I asked for a plain modem and bought my own router.

This would be the best route to go, 2Wire is crap.

                      True.

I dusted off a linksys router from '04 and am using it as my router with the 2wire as just a modem and it's working fine.

I didn't think the 2wire would last this long (6 years) because it looked like a POS to me.

We have a craptacular ISP at work, and yep - 2 computers on a DSL modem will crash it every time.
