NAS - what other features nice to have?

posted a thread here before i couldn't access my NAS to browser TLS requirements. it's a netgear readynas duo.. probably 12-14 yrs old now? i got it used from someone. had another scare i was SOL again though i managed to find a way to downgrade firefox's minimum TLS. been living on the edge for a while since other browsers won't connect due to TLS requirement. fast forward... don't want to deal with it anymore though not a real loss if i can't really access since i have other backups. i use it to stream stuff at home and some torrents. i only have 2x1TB drives in disk mirroring mode that seems to be enough.

i have another spare 1tb drive and though i can get a newer 4-bay 3.5" sized one, or just keep the old as tertiary backup and get a new with 2.5" or nvme based 2 or 4 bay drive. torrent, preferrably compatible with transmission, is all i really need. but are there other beneficial features that's usable? i sometimes access it via vpn to get some files if i need to but it's not that often i do that. that ability would be thru my router and vpn anyway. 2.5gb would be good to future proof it a little since i plan to rewire to cat6 in future once i get a 2.5gb router for wired backhaul (along with a couple of 2.5gb switches too)

Thing I use most on my NAS is as a media server for Plex/Jellyfin. Though that capability might move it out of your targeted price range.

Things like Nextcloud can be handy as well.

kewl thanks. looks like there might be stuff i can take advantage of. further research shows synology > qnap with the latter getting quite a bit of feedback on security and vulnerability issues, and slow responses from a support experience perspective. though i can't tell if that's the consumer / home level or the enterprise level type stuff.

so far the only drawback i saw is synology needing to get the 10gb ethernet upgrade (part available for replacement) vs. coming in natively with minimum 2.5gb to future proof it since i plan to upgrade cables whether this year or next to cat6x once i get my new router to get over 1gb speed (am not getting it because i'm limited by my router).

well looks like i'm forced to accelerate the plan. freaking PGE and your stupid outages!

UPS battery didn't seem to give enough power and enough time for me to run and gracefully shut down nas. should've / could've done from pc but i was trying to shut that down fast too. now very old NAS (netgear readynas duo V2 rnd2150-100nas) keeps just blinking on status lights and worse, the ethernet light doesn't blink either now. i moved ethernet directly to router vs. switch and still no light. different ethernet cable - no dice. just keeps blinking and i can't find a status light pattern just like this.

looks have some deal hunting to do on synology. and a replacement battery for my APC UPS. maybe find more time to troubleshoot this thing direct connecting to pc.

i may just go wtih asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen2. i'd love to have my hands on the synology but this is about half the price and i can put the $ saved into larger drives. there is also an app to make it a vpn server so i won't have to worry too much when i upgrade the router and lose my free vpn as part of my orbi rbr-50. i just continually renew my free ddns from noip.com

I have a ReadyNAS Duo V1 . Still running (although only as a back up). If you come over to the Netgear Community, you'll find all the "workarounds".

For all things related to NETGEAR ReadyNAS, this category provides support for network-attached storage solutions. Whether you need help with setup, RAID...

great saudadeii ! someone else that has it running this long. lol

i've been on the community and posted actually since I can't find the answers. maybe it's too old? the netgear community doesn't usually archive away old stuff iirc. i got help on the blinking lights decoder and it's saying it can't detect the hardware. i already bought a sata connector with power since my old connector to usb can only handle 2.5" or sata drives or nmve. needed some juice to power up and see the 3.5" (wdd red). also reformatted and viewable now in windows 11 but alas, i move it back to the nas and it ain't working. even iwth a reset, i can't seem to get it connected. i don't know yet if I can connect directly to nas thru ethernet if i can't even get it to boot up though.

will do more digging. don't want to give yet.

Is this a new drive or one you had in the readynas before? Can you attach the drive back to windows and just delete the partition? No partition, no file system, just a blank drive. Then put back in the NAS and power up.

If you can get it running, there's a mod you can make to one of the configuration files to stop the HTTPS redirect. You'll have to add SMB 1.0 under features and Programs in Win 11 to access it as a networked drive if you're able to get it running.

Got my Duo back around 2011 for work stuff. Outgrew the 2TB and got a WD EX4 (4x2tb) around 2014. Basically powered off the Duo and served as a book end for a few years. Once the WD went EOL, I decided to use the Duo to back up the WD. Since both NAS's are still working, I've been putting off the decision to upgrade.

it's old. nas went kaput from a power outage and i was rushing to shut down pc on its own separate UPS where maybe, i should've open the nas url and shut it down since it's sensitive to non-graceful shutdown. i had to reconfigure/resintall it before a couple of times. should've / could've.. it survived power outages before when i'm at work.

i just finished low level format on 500gb i had originally and see if plugging that in will make the nas see it again. the 1tb one, after regular format (not low level) still could not be seen by nas since the blinking lights are same. i'm not even trying to access it to the pc. i'm just making the nas recognize the drive and give me a working confirmation status light. i'll keep plugging away. i'm not sure if i can telnet to it and redo the firmware / software like how i recovered a corrupt firmware on my router 2 yrs ago. it's odd it would be a hardware issue unless not having enough power from the UPS caused issue until i shut it down. i actually had to unplug it since pressing the front power button wasn't working to shut it down that way. i'll upgrade anyway. i'm thinking i can run an ethernet and put it in the safe as another backup .
