No you are forced to use iTunes unless you jailbreak your phone.

Why does your phone "erase" when you sync it with a different computer?

I've migrated my iPhones (3G, 4) between 5 different computers over the past 4 years and never lost a scrap of data.

apple kinda made it difficult for a user to sync an iphone to multiple computers.

        i bought an 3G 3-4 years ago.

i had set it up on my work machine.

then i tried to sync it to my home machine it completely wiped every thing out of it.

i mean no help at all, back then with itunes.

i was so glad when i dumped that thing for an android (dell streak) phone.

It's basically a relative nightmare unless you drink the Apply Koolaid with every other media based application you use. Some profess it's not as bad as I make it sound, so ymmv.

Personally i am forced to use an iphone due to work necessity, unfortunately. I agree that for a user that wants to be more hands on (for better or worse), the android is a better choice

            It's really not that bad.

Seriously, I've moved my iPhones around several times, never lost any data. Easiest way to make sure is to just copy the iTunes folder (usually it's in My Music) from the old computer to your new computer. It helps if you copy the whole My Music folder over, too. After that, just sync your phone like normal.

Takes about 5 minutes of prep time, and then your phone will sync perfectly, no loss of data.

And no, I haven't taken even a sip of the Kool-Aid. I've got an Android tablet, too, so I'm at least marginally familiar with that platform as well. I prefer the iOS setup.

I'll have to try that. Im not a huge fan of proprietary intermediary file handling (like those Scan USB's with their file manager... ick )

its probably just me being a curmudgeon lol

Just to clarify: I install iTunes before I do the file copy. I don't know if it'll make a difference, but iTunes might write over the existing folder if it sees something there. Like I said, I don't know.

OP, you need to turn off automatic sync in iTunes. You want it set up as manually sync your library. I've been using iTunes for years, I never let it tell me what to do
