    Smart HDD Virus

I think my computer has been infected with a virus called "Smart HDD". It comes up as a fake scanner telling you that your hard drive is about to fail and ask you to make a purchase online. I would think that once I put my credit card information in then I'm in real big trouble.

I don't think my HDD is really dying but how do I remove this thing? From what I have read this virus is new.

Had it infect my computer at 7am this morning was gone by 9:30am following these steps...

Smart HDD is a fake hard drive optimization and analysis program that displays false information so that it can scare you into thinking that there is something wrong with your computer's hard disks. This program is part of the family of scareware programs. Smart HDD is installed via Trojans that display fake error messages on the infected computer. These messages will state that there is something wrong with your computer's hard drive in order to scare you into purchasing the program.

Do you use P2P file sharing, and maybe didn't check the extension, or file-type?

I can't speak for the OP but it was actually my work computer that got infected. The raciest thing that particular desktop ever sees is youtube. No porn sites, no P2P, nothing. Company website, email (no attachments), word, excel and occasionally microsoft streets and trips for routing my drivers. It appeared out of nowhere and locked up the whole system by hiding files and such. A real PITA.

              Oh THANK YOU!

I got it fixed using the same steps. The thing almost had me fooled last night. You really saved my life there.

To answer the question of do I use P2P and watch porn online. Yes I use P2P but only from a few groups that I've been following through out the years. I've never gotten anything from them. As for porn, I'm a 26yr old single male. I watch my porn on Calguns. All that M1 Garand porn makes me hard

I think I know where I got it from.....I won't name it but I sure as hell won't visit that place again.

Thanks again guys. I really appreciate the help.

Good that you got the virus off, but I'd be safe and reformat =[

That thing is going around. I got it yesterday. I followed the bleeping computer link and got rid of it it in about an hour or two. That thing is a pain, but definetly easy to remove. Typically I just reformate. Oddly enough, Smart HDD is still on my start menu
