Do I need a new DSL modem?

I have been an ATT DSL customer for about six years (?). When I initially started with them, the install kit included a Speedstream 5100 modem. I currently have the 1.5Mbps and want to upgrade to either the 3.0 or 6.0 Mbps plan. Is the modem obsolete and in need of replacing (with or without the upgrade)? BTW, I'm not interested in changing my ISP.

AT&T should be able to tell you for sure, but in my experience you should be able to upgrade your connection without making any hardware/software changes on your end. I've got a couple of older DSL modems in service on 6 Mb links with no problems.

Your current modem will work fine.

I have the same modem, and have the 3Mbps plan.

IIRC that modem can handle it. ATT and other ISP's throttle the speed remotely.

Is it the 3 light version or the 4 light version? If its the old rev A I'd toss it and get the newer model. I think they are like 20 bucks on ebay.

Did you lease or buy-out the modem?

If you leased it, they will provide a new one if you need one for the speed upgrade, which I don't think will require a new modem anyway.

The modem has five lights. I own it; it was free with the install.

I just replaced my AT&T wifi modem with a cheap T-link one one from Amazon.com. The AT&T modems have been a nightmare since I got them several years ago. I went through 3 in 4 years. Constant rebooting locking up. I hated them. I have the 3 meg plan and it kept throttling down to under 1mb per. Since I got this new one I've had no problem.

You can log into the modem and check it out. Back in the day I had AT&T DSL and was paying for "up to 3mb" speed. I logged into the modem and it was locked at 2 meg. F'n crooks.

The speed displayed in the modem is the speed the modem is sync'd at, if you were paying for 3Mbit and you were getting 2Mbit you were getting the advertised (up to 3Mbit) speed. With DSL the speed drops the farther you are from the DSLAM, iirc 15k feet is the max distance you can be.

No this one was programmed. I was 1200 feet away with a shielded "home run" to the modem. That signal was clean.
