    Folding@Home ?

    Anybody here doing this?

I'm thinking about donating some computer resources to the cause.

There was an old thread on this. A bunch of us did that for a while.
    I've dropped off.

I did it a LONG time ago. Even though it ran "nice" (low priority CPU thread), it still had some overhead. They may have improved it, or it is possible that todays computers are smack full of RAM and it doesn't even notice. But I did at the time.

Also did the seti@home program for awhile. The truth is out there...

        O.K. Found the old thread.
        How come you dropped off?

I'm curious why folks give it up.

I have been running distributed.net's client for about 10 years almost straight on multiple computers, maybe it's time for a change!

Graphical only or can you run it at init, and just check a log when you want to? If cli-only is possible, I will run it.

I stopped when the computers got smart enough to not run at full power all the time. There's no longer such a thing as extra wasted cycles - modern processors will shut off cores, etc as needed. In fact if you're running a single thread on a multicore system it will shuffle the work from core to core to keep the temperature down in any given core. If it can't do that because there's something else running on the other cores one option it has is to decrease the clock speed for a bit until things cool down. So you're slowing your machine down and you're using both electricity.

Distributed computing is an interesting concept, I support it via the SETI project.

I do Docking@home when my computer is idle or I should say when I am not using it at night or while I am at work. There is an option to set the cpu threshold on when to start or stop.

Docking@Home is a project which uses Internet-connected computers to perform scientific calculations that aid in the creation of new and improved medicines. The project aims to help cure diseases such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

Does any of the @home stuff really help, I dont know. I like to think it does.
