      This was my backup and, along with my laptop, was stolen with my other (backup) portable hard drive. (long story...I may get it back eventually)
      You should also know that it is a very bad practice to keep backups on the same machine or in the same location as the original. What happened to you is a perfect example of why. Offsite backups (using a cloud service works) are a good thing.

        Touche' !

        I'm definitely going cloud/carbonite next time.

        I still hold hopes of getting the info back. I'm going to try the freezer technique first w/ a new cable and plugging in the back of the case.

        Then a trip to Fry's.

        Then pray.

        Thanks all (yes, even you Captain!)

          Another worthy tried and true option is Acronis, excellent software for backup, with an option for cloud storage. If you buy the cloud option, you don't have to pay for the software, its included in the monthly cost.

          Home = $50/year for 250GB
          Workstation = $75/year for 500GB

          I like the workstation package, not just for the extra spare, but because the software is a little more granular if you are more of an advanced user.
