web connection issues with ff ie chrome

Computer is a Lenovo x61 laptop with Gigabit Ethernet and wifi g.
Router is very old Linksys (before Cisco) wrtg54.
Modem is Linksys befcmu10 cable modem.
    ISP is Cox cable.

A week ago my web pages would load ultra slow or not at all on Firefox. Ie would not work at all. Today I used my Verizon 4g hotspots to install chrome on the laptop. It opened pages lightning fast for 7-10 pages then pretty much ground to a halt. Speed test starts the test but then quits and a browser error pops up shutting the browser.
I ran avira and malwarebytes with no infections.
    What could the issue be?

First off I'd suggest getting a new router. WRT54G has got to be 8 years old or so, and that's really pushing the lifespan.

That may or may not fix your problem, but it's going to at least save you some issues later.

its not the age of the technology (in this instance) directly, but likely given the age = its full of dust and is constantly rebooting itself due to acceptable temp exceeded. That being said - spend 7$ on some comp dust off, and hose that sucker down. If the situation repeats itself within 7hrs then its not a dust issue and you should investigate your hardware.

Since you have cable modem do you have tv service with them too? Any issues with ANY of the channels like pixelating, snow, distortion. If you do it could ne a signal issue in which it would require a service call from them.

Recommend getting a new router; can you log into the router to check the transmission error rates? That could be a indication of bad/flaky packets it lots of errors are sent/received.

What OS are you on? Win7 or Vista? Is your Adobe Flash and Java up to date? Speedtest requires Flash, I believe.

So I connected my linksys cable modem directly to the lan port on the laptop. Chrome was running ok sometimes timing out pages. I used Windows add/remove to remove firefox and chrome is working better. xfinity says I get 52ms ping, 2mb down and .43 up.

            I am running XP SP3.

Does anyone know the DOS command to repeatedly ping an IP address? I recall it being somethng similar to ping x.x.x.x -t 1200 or something like that.

Could it be a DNS issue?

              Ping www.example.com -t (Use Control-C to stop.)

You could try ipconfig /flushdns to clear DNS cache, and force a new DNS lookup.

I use Google DNS for all address resolutions on my home network. Works great.
