Keeping AT&T email after canceling internet services?

So I made the call to cancel my AT&T services because I'm moving to an area that is not serviced by them.

This morning it dawned on me "what about my email"?

Will I still be able to log onto it? Or do I need to forward it to another email provider?

Thanks for any help in advance!

Call them back and ask, I think they have to leave your account open. Of course leaving your email on their servers long term is asking for trouble. Setup a mail client and download all of it, that way you have a copy of it if they accidently clean your account.

I think you lose it but i could be wrong. I think when you open a google account it asks you if you want to import your old email.

You will lose access to the email account when your service is shut off. This is why it is best to use a web-based email provider like Gmail.

No, you will not be able to keep it. Additionally, they will terminate the email entirely, so you can't turn on auto-forwarding and expect your messages to be re-directed to an alternate email.

This is why I encourage people to have an email address independent of your ISP. I use GMail, but I except that Google will use some of my info to target ads at me.

Another alternative is to buy a domain for yourself. If you go to Godaddy.com and get "Shellshocker66.com", it costs you $12-15/year, and you get either a free email address or email forwarding (I can't remember which). That way, your email stays the same as long as you renew your domain.

Yep, AT&T will shut off your e-mail (which is one of the things they use to try and retain you on their crappy services). I always use gmail, so that my personal e-mail is not tied to my ISP or to my work e-mail.

I had SBC (ATT) and when I cancelled it they sent me a card saying Email would continue without issue. 8 month now and still using SBC plus a ATT email account I also set up. But, do call em to make sure.

It was AOHell I was thinking of. Sbc was/is partnered with Yahoo. Since Yahoo provides free webmail you should call and ask.

The GF was worried that she would lose everything when she turned off the AT&T service when she moved in with me, so I called and asked them a few questions:

                  • Will she lose her email address?
                    • No.
                  • Can I move her addresses under my SBC/AT&T account?
                    • No, because they're associated with another account.
                  • When she restarts service, can she use the same email address as the primary as she did before?
                    • Maybe. The system may and may not, but because it was a voluntary cutoff, and not forced by AT&T for billing or other issues, it's more likely that it might work.

Mine still works, even after 4+years, I received an @sbcglobal.net address, instead of the yahoo.com addresses you get now.

I'd advise *AGAINST* GoDaddy. I know several CalGuns members work with/know where to get domain hosting for a LOT less than GoDaddy, and the providers in question are generally 2A supportive as well.
