So ive spent the weekend trying to figure things out, but I'm not that good at this so I tought I could use some help.
What I want to do is have my wife call me from her iPad.
That sounds like a challenge already huh.
Now let me say she is in Mexico.
And the biggest incentive of all: It has to be free.
This is what I have accomplished so far:
Free calling from out of the states trough sip droid from a disconnected (no service) android via wifi to my American number.
Pretty much what I want, except I need it to be the iPad, not an android.
If anyone can help, please drop by.
In the meantime I will leave instructions for what I have accomplished. (free calling from a disconnected phone while on wifi)
1-Register for a free sip account like http://www.iptel.org/, write down the username, password and server/proxy. Example: user: calgunner1 pw: 1234 server/proxy: iptel.org
2-register for a phone number from http://www.ipkall.com/, when registering, use the info from step 1 , when done, write down your new "Forwarding" phone number.
3-Use your android phone, or a SIP application on your computer to test and make sure the SIP number and the Forwarding number are working by calling your Forwarding number (from a landline or any other working line like your neighbors etc) , if this is correctly setup, your android phone/pc will receive the call. (always use WIFI for tests)
4-Register for a new gmail account then go to google.com/voice to setup a GV account. It will allow you to*choose a* google voice number, then*GV will ask you for your forwarding number, thats the phone number you got from ipkall. Google voice will then verify this number by calling it and you need to be able to answer that call, to enter the verification code.
5-Install google voice application on your android device.
6-Install sipdroid app from the market. Once sipdroid is installed, on it's main screen there will be a button for google voice integration, do that.
This can also be a lot of help for people with small minute plans or for people traveling overseas. Just make sure you configure your phone while in the US, or you will have to play with a hide my ip adress application.
Also, the ipkall number you will only need if you don't have a working number at all.
If you have a working landline or a working cell, skip the first 3 steps and on google voice registration, use your working number as your forwarding number.
One more thing, sipdroid will open an account on your behalf at pbxes.org , make sure you log in that website and enter your personal info or it gets deleted after a few weeks. Also, beware pbxes.org will save your google voice password, so it's not a bad idea to start all of this with a fresh, new, gmail adress.
Hope this helps a soldier in overseas deployment
