if the HD is still alive, but the laptop is deader than disco, you could possibly use a SATA/IDE to USB cable dooheekee and then grab the info as needed.

also, you can buy a 2.5" HD enclosure to house the drive and use it as a source and also as a back up medium...

if you want, i have done this a gazillion times. where are you located?

If you need real professional data recover, be prepared to shell out $600-1000.
And there is no guarantee they'd get all the files you need.

Yup, disk is completely dead... Need to open it up and do a mechanical transfer. I got a price quote back in 2004, then it was $1000 plus...

I just used a company in So Cal. They did an excellent job fast turn around. I can get the number for you on Monday when I get into the office if your interested.

The bad news cost $10,000 but that was the repair a raid array with multiple physical failures.

believe it or not, check out GEEK SQUAD.

i had someone go there when their HD died. IIRC, they recovered just about everything for under $500.

this was a couple or so years ago...

i have been using Drive Savers for 8 years - never had a disk they couldnt recover. i had clients loose laptops over the side of boats, while running, and they still pulled everything off the disk.

              drivesaversdatarecovery.com

they are the ONLY people i would trust with me and my clients data.

                  This.

I've been working in IT for quite a while and I'm a DriveSavers partner. There's a link in my sig that'll get you a discount on a recovery through them.

If they can't get your data they won't charge you, but I've never seen them NOT get the data. It's not the cheapest thing in the world, but they are the best at it.

I come from an IT background. When you send your drives out for Data Recovery services, all they do is run applications like Easy Recovery and charge you up the *** for it.

Maybe someone like geeksquad, but a good data recovery will have a clean room to replace internals etc.

Those utilities will only work on a spinning drive. I think the OP said the drive was dead. In that case, it's very mechanical and very expensive...

The last time I had to do it with a drive suffering a physical failure (electrical fault induced too) it was 2 grand. IIRC the company name was Data Recovery. Expensive but top notch work.

That is what data recovery is.

data extraction, on the other hand, looks like this,

disassembled hard drives in clean rooms are re-assembled with new working parts and then they run Easy Recovery and charge you up the ***.
