need a new computer I think

One of the PCs that is about 5-6 years old started to smell like wires burning. We shut it down checked all the external cables, wires etc and nothing there. It plugs to a surge protector. Looks internal issues.

It was mostly used for playing games (WOW) and homework for kids.

I am trying to find something for no more than $700 OTD. Don't need a monitor or keyboard if getting a desktop.

I would rather spend the $s on the internals. Prefer Win 7 and Office 2010 included.

    Laptops are in play also.

    Any suggestions?

Unplug everything on the outside and open up the case and vacuum/blow out the dust in your computer and in the power supply. Then checkout www.newegg.com

                Intel GMA HD.

Kids play the PS3 now so video card was not critical.

It is always a sad day when we lose PC gamers. I tried console but I love my PC too much

The burning smell is prob. coming from inside the power supply, capacitor giving out and eventually pop.
If you still want to salvage it, power supplies are easy to replace.

Capacitors don't smell like burning. They generally smell like dog poop. (try not to have one pop like a firecracker in your house... especially if its cold outside )The burnt silicone smell is probably a resistor or voltage regulator.

Running a UPS keeps hardware in working order YEARS LONGER (providing that you don't have a $<$50 power supply without Active PFC)...
