netgear replaced my nas drive - downgraded

so i got a pipeline hd 5800 or 5900 rpm with 8mb cache. originally, it had a 7200 barracuda with 32mb cache. not sure it's worth complaining about since it's only a nas and i don't do heavy copying. if any, my network will be my bottleneck on speed most likely.

now i want to get 2nd drive for redundancy. i'm thinking at least 7200 rpm but will it matter? if i have mismatched speed drives and cache in disk mirroring, does it matter? (don't think it will but maybe a same model will be ok and save me a few $).

not familiar with nas stuff when mis matching the drives. i know capacity wise, the extra capacity won't be used until both drives are the same.

Wait, they sent you an out of spec drive? I would call and complain, they are NOT sending you the same product that you had. Demand the same specs as the original equipment. I didn't think anyone made 5400RPM drives any more. Don't wait, jump on it and ride it hard. Demand proper service.

i have the specs meaty-btz. i copied them all from the drive itself and the gui interface. let's just say i was surprised. i can't find much reviews on it, but any available was low rated.

Indeed, the actively have shafted you. You need to be on the support call NOW and get this righted. Push until you get this resolved.

This would be like losing a nice 900GB Dual Channel 10K RPM SAS drive on my HP server and HP sending me a 900GB Single Channel 7200 RPM Second Tier 1-year warranty Non-enterprise replacement. You would bet I would raise hell every hour on the hour till I got relief. It is inexcusable to reduce spec a drive.

If you don't say NO.. you are saying Yes in your silence. Make no mistake.

Oh hell no. Don't stand for this.

It's not so much that they left out the Vaseline here as it is that they switched it out for Vicks Vap-O-Rub.

There are still 5400 RPM drives out there, mostly the ones for the green-weenies. They're significantly slower than the 7200 ones.

LOL.. i did notice the nas interface was really slow. unsure if that's drive related since a web gui.

i called today and they'll be getting back to me by tomorrow.

            guess i did get shafted.

Tell me more, what is this "get back to you tomorrow"? That kind of information is available to support people's fingertips in seconds.

Screw Netgear, no more money from me ever.

Of course I also might be spoiled rotten by more than half a decade of having access to Enterprise Support Services. My support expectations are to be served correctly the first time, quickly with no BS, or we take our millions of $$ elsewhere.

meaning the support engineer could only gather the data. i was surprised i had to give the specs but i figure she had to get approval first and validate the specs and not just take my word for it. understood they should have this on their knowledge base. maybe a stretch.. they need to find out why i was sent a lower spec drive? all guesses as to why right now so i just kinda bit my tongue and give them a chance. but experience wise and same as my netgear before, i'm a little disappointed. the only saving grace is that i was supposedly over my 3 mos tech support via phone and the gal last dec allowed it.

so i got my original spec drive in today. same spec as the one it came with - 7200 rpm 32mb cache barracuda.

to my surprise it is not a "new" one. case says "certified repaired hdd"

now they're not asking for the "wrong spec" one back. i guess at this rate, it's a win-win for both parties. they cut their losses for not asking for the "consumer" grade one back. i cut my losses for getting a repaired hard drive but i now have disk mirroring, at least.

i'm going to outgrow this anyway by summer. raw format from my dslr is eating up space pretty fast and i'm now also doing batch convert to jpeg of same resolution for the SO so she doesn't have to convert from raw to jpeg.
