nVidia drivers not recognizing card?

Okay, it's been a long time since I've had an nVidia card: my last was a 7600 GT back in 2006. I've been straight up ATI since then. My new laptop, however, has an nVidia GT540m, but it doesn't seem to be recognized anywhere. I can't even upgrade the drivers - they don't see a compatible card.

Any suggestions?

Don't use the auto detect. Use the manual method. It's in there.

285.28 is probably the latest. It might be a beta for the "m"card you have. I just set up a 560m...it was a beta driver, but worked well.

+1 on manually searching. Their site doesn't seem to correctly ID the 500 series mobile cards.

This is the 290.53 beta, downloaded from www.guru3d.com.

I didn't see anything for manual detection? After running the executable I get the UAC notice, then it does a system check, then gives me the error message shown above.

What is this manual detection of which you speak?

aren't nvidias mobility drivers separate from their desktop drivers?

Yes. I believe so. Also make sure you get the correct 32 or 64 bit version.

I don't know much, but I found I had to manually select "download beta update" recently.

I've been so used to Catalyst drivers that contain both desktop and mobile versions for so long, I never even thought to wonder if there was a separate driver for a laptop.
