Seagate & Western Digital Slashing Warranties

I can only assume that so many of their drives are dieing an early death that they can no longer afford to stand behind them. Anyway I know what brands I won't be buying.

Next year, Seagate will reduce many of its internal hard drive warranties from five years to one, and Western Digital from three years to two. The companies claim that this change will bring hard drive warranties in line with those of other components.

That is such a competitive business. I imagine that the rise of Flash memory is doing them no favors.

Competing in the hard drive arena requires earning the customers confidence that your product is a trustworthy place for their precious data. A 5 year warranty isn't about replacing dead drives, it's a statement that you believe in your own product and expect them on average to last at least 5 years. When a company reduces their warranty to a year they are telling their customers loudly and clearly that they don't trust their own products to last much longer than that year. And remember that the year often starts from the date of manufacture and not the purchase date. The smart move for Hitachi and Samsung would be to add a year to their warranties and push the trust issue in advertising and then sit back and eat Seagate and WD's lunch.

Flash will become a problem for them as prices of SSDs fall but for now it's two different markets. 60-180GB SSDs are used for boot drives but you still need traditional "spinners" for storing data.

something is going on in the supply chain from hard drives, have you noticed the 100-200% increasing in prices in the last few months?
they may not have the drives available to do warranty replacements

still not sold on the SSD with a set life span of read/writes ...

Not gonna happen. Hitachi and Samsung are not going to exist in 3 months - they have both been acquired by WD and Seagate.

This isn't an issue of "not trusting their products". This is a balance sheet issue - they don't want to have to keep so much money in the warranty reserve. By cutting the warranty period down from 3 to 2 years, they reduce the required reserve money by 33%.

Have you heard of the Thailand flooding that knocked out roughly 45% of the worlds hard drive capacity? That's the reason for the price increase.

MTBF drops commensurately with the increase of data density on the platters. Someone that knows about maths at both companies apparently just did some.

My old vertex le in raid still going after 3 or 4 years. vertex 2 still going afternearly 3. No degradation yet. This is about when you'd upgrade to a new mechanical drive for space or due to failure. I expect the le drives to fail soon and the 2 won't be too fart behind, but newer drives are supposed to have longer lifetimes. Catch me in 8 years and see if my next buy lasts Kingston hyperx is next.

just waiting on prices to come back down on mechanical drives so I can pickup my last 17 Samsung 2tb drives.already have 13 of them

To bad I really like Western's VelociRaptor drives, come to think of it I haven't had a bad one yet.

Well, dang. At least now I have an idea why the call from Apple about my iMac's new HD has not been made: Apple is also waiting for new HDs to come in.
