I would tend to agree with grabbing old router, such as the wrt54gl and pairing it with the high gain antenna pointed at the neighbors house. You can find one of those old routers for probably 30 bucks or so. The new firmware would be free, set it up as a bridge and you would probably be just about good to go!

Of course, if you really wanted to be somewhat insane, just run a fiber-optic line over to the neighbors house and get permission to plug into one of their ethernet ports. The fiber-optic line can go a lot farther than that 1/4 mile…

Use a satellite dish they work great.

Buy this ALFA 1 Watt Wifi Amp/booster LOL You will love it. They also make a 2 watt but it will not work in monitor mode for fun.

If you go with this method style, can I suggest that you put the actual WiFi receiver on the roof (properly protected) and then run ethernet cable from there. Provide an on the ground method of power cycling the
WiFi box on the roof, if it hangs up, you don't need to go climbing to pull the plug and restart it.

CAT-5 or better ethernet cable will deal easily with 200 foot run if needed
vs. the loss of signal of a 2.4GHz WiFi RF signal.

          How about a NanoStation M?

I use to remember setting up Proxim Networks repeaters and site to site bridge relays, and before I left networking, Ubiquity Networks was the next up and coming, cheap solution.
