Vista keeps freezing... even after reformat? what gives

Had a few instances of it freezing, reboot everything is fine, and became more and more frequent. I reformatted twice and after a few minutes it freezes and locks up. any info is appreciated

oh forgot to mention, been having horizontal lines showing up on my monitor, so would that be from the video card overheating ?

Yup sounds like your video card. I had that card before and the crappy fan that it comes with needed to be replaced after 2 years.

You have 2 problems happening at once here.

1st: your video card is overheating, open your case and clean it off, if that does not work look into a new/extra fan for it.

2nd: you have Windows Vista installed.

I am looking into a new card, maybe the geforce 9600 gt , and a seasonic 300w PS

I have a Dell Vostro 200 Slim tower so my options are limited, any advice on a new card and PS that won't break the bank ?

under 200 for both, don't need the top of the line card, just enough to play mw2 decently, my x1300 card was ok so im sure anything I can get relatively cheap will be the same performance if not better yes ?

yeah, I paid under 100 and got a good card. check tigerdirect.com, just be sure you know what kind of slot the card goes in. I'm not familiar with the dell vostro.

Quit guessing and install ProcessExplorer and a hardware monitor (for your hardware), and find out if it is software (something hogging the CPU) or hardware (something overheating).

It's dying of old age. I agree find the folder marked system32 and take it the recycle bin.
