is this a dual antenna wifi adapter?

as i'm reading more about new routers (my friend threw a couple of suggestions that held me back from purchasing an asus rt-n56u yet, plus no ddwrt for it yet)... i started understanding the whole 150 vs. 300 vs. 450 mpbs speed. 2.4ghz vs. 5 ghz.. check. got that. i started to realize that the neatest (usually most expensive) routers out there are overkill unless i upgrade everything. i'm starting to transfer more files thru the network and i'm not even really running a complete media server yet.

so it started me thinking "why do i need a triple antenna router?" i'm not even sure the newest laptop has triple antenna. i opened my work machine (2yr old) and below is the pic. i cannot really determine using my google-fu if the intel w5100agn is a single or dual antenna.

does this mean there's 2 antenna? (the connectors above 1-main and 1-aux). heck, maybe i can get away with a lower priced router that's only dual antenna since i'm not upgrading the wifi cards on all machines. all i have to worry about then is just the signal strength results.

Yes that uses two antenna's. Some of the newer 802.11n cards use three. An 802.11n card with one antenna can connect at 150Mbps max, add another 150Mbps for each additional antenna. Each of the antenna's provides another channel and the card bonds them together to give you the increased speed. You can get a laptop that has a card using three antenna's right now, but you have to order it from the manufacturer and have it built to order(Centrino Ultimate-N 6300). The 450Mbps 802.11n routers are somewhat expensive too.

thanks for validating jday! yeah, i saw triple antenna routers like the wndr4500 for like $180! yikes! i can live with dual antenna. only really 1 other machine i would transfer files over, but since i'm probably going to be doing some cabling, probably won't even need it at all now but nice to have there.
