    Satellite phones?

My niece is in Argentina, her mother thought she needs a satellite phone, to chat with her. I have no idea? Ay thoughts on this, if so, any thoughts on the phones, services?

    Thanks

I thought Argentina had good cellular coverage? But yeah, and internet connection and Skype is the most cost effective way to call home. $20 a month gets you unlimited minutes.

Yeah, they do Skype already. Looking for more in depth. Is there any reason they can't just cell to cell? Stupid questions I know, but we have zero knowledge

Smartphone + Skype unlimited plan = cheap phone-phone calls. International rates are not cheap, especially on cellular.

Sothe proper response is really, "sister, wth were you thinking? You definitely do not need to spend a couple thousand dollars on a sat phone, just a cell and Skype" really! ? That is awesome guys.

Iridium or Inmarsat are the two I would consider. Both work well everywhere I've gone globally. Iridium is probably slightly more reliable and consistent. Inmarsat will hold a conversation better if stationary. Both need to be used outdoor with view to the sky to be reliable.

I'd go with an iridium based hand held. You'll likely pay around $1.50 per minute. You might have a look at http://www.satphonestore.com/ . I have a 9555 I use for work. It works well and usually comes with a nice travel kit and case. This is unlikely to be your most affordable option but it will work anywhere.

I called Verizon for the heck of it this morning, it would be $5/min for cell service roughly, so the $1.50/min option is more attractive, relatively speaking. There maybe an issue getting landline there if not a citizen, it's kinda weird, and it's hard to get info from a 21 year old. Thank you very much for the input on the iridium.

It's still going to cost close to $1000 for the phone and activation.

My friend works on Boeing's satellite communications thing... I know they are looking for more people to use it. It ain't cheap and I'm not sure that they let civilians use it... I know scientists like to use it.

                              I hate the Iridium.

we have them for work. Always losing signal. Plus no one can call them because of the international number.
