I'm on mine now. Its not a replacement for the ipad. I have both. I'm keeping the ipad. No camera, 3g and you can't view pictures you stored on the cloud - yup, big problem and it's been discussed on the kindle fire forums. You can't zoom in on movies, rotate the movie views and the app market is considerably smaller than Apple's. All that being said, I'm still keeping mine . Decent to watch movies, videos, read books, listen to music and web browsing. I'll keep my ipad for the heavy duty stuff - it also serves as my gps when I'm on long road trips and when wireless isn't available.

I can rotate movie views (as in landscape vs portrait) on my wife's Fire.
It's not an iPad and definitely not as capable.

It's akin to asian market Android 2.3 7" capacitive touch screen tablets, probably a bit more stable due to the Amazon/Kindle "skin" (only Android 3+ versions were really designed for tablet use so most asian brand tablets with Android 2.3 or lower suffer stability and compatibility issues, which is sorta sidestepped with the Amazon OS version which blocks most stuff that isn't compatible with the Fire). Price is similar to tablets with 2.3 OS, although you can find 7" tablets with 2.2 OS for sub $100 (but they'll usually have slower processors).

I've been able to load .mobi, .pdf and e-pub books by mailing it to the @kindle.com account they give you. Also had no trouble loading .mp4 vids. Sideloaded nook and aldiko readers so the thing can read virtually anything other than iBooks.

My wife likes it... she found the ipad too bulky for heavy duty reading and isn't that techy so didn't want to futz with an asian tablet issues. Fire was more her style and she likes it a lot- has already gone through 3 or 4 books since getting it last week.

I have one, and you probably shoud not try and compare to an iPad, they dont really do the same thing. The fire is basicly a video version of the regular kindle with an app store and light web browsing thrown in. It's not a tablet computer(despite what many adds and reviews claim), for example I would not use it to replace my laptop for taking notes in class or anythign like that. that being said I like mine and fully intend to keep it, what it does it does well and it does everything I need it to do.

the ipad is better for games and surfing. i found it a little too big for long term reading. the kindle fire is much easier to hold when reading and the the stereo speakers at the top in portrait mode are nice to stream audio while reading. if you do a lot of reading go for the kindle. if you are looking for a cheap ipad killer don't bother just fork out the cash and get the ipad.
