What causes a HD to get corrupted?

And how can I prevent further corruption to the HD?

Had to repair my iMac's HD last night using the start-up CD. Not sure if I lost any files. Looked at the log in Console and I have no idea what all that info there means.

Posting some of the log would help.

Power failure and shock are the two most common causes. The best way to handle this is to keep backups. I make an incremental image of my main system nightly. If there is a failure I'm back up and running in under an hour.

Run a SMART scan on the drive and check it for errors, it could be dying.

Do you have a UPS? I swear they really do help.

Also look for recalls, my old G5 crashed a drive, found out they had a recall on the Power Supply. Got a new drive and PS from them.

Hard drives are hard to "prevent" corruption, considering they are mechanical in nature, and have moving parts. All you can do is be proactive and do preventative maintenance (i.e. backup, defrag, etc.) and that's all you really can do. When a hard drive fails, it's for a number of reasons (bad sectors, error on read/write heads, non functioning motor, bad controller board)

All this is unpredictable. My advise is to just make sure you have a spare drive handy and use time capsule or create a backup, and call it a day, that or if you have the money/storage , go up all the important files on the cloud.

Only problem is that it's an iMac, i.e. no user serviceable parts. Especially now that they use proprietary screws and hard drives/drive cables.
