Hi all, I have hughes net satellite internet, and it is less than 1mb/s download. It is painfully slow, is their something I can do to speed it up?

There are quite a few limitations of satellite internet over standard cable based (DSL / FiOS / "cable").

It's not really designed to be a competitor to these; more so it simply provides connectivity in locales where you otherwise would not have any.

No, its not just that its even when I am not over my limit. This stupid fair access policy is ridiulous. I get slowed down for using to much, but if I go two or three days without using it, its not like it builds up. Either way they are just butt raping me.

Yeah, hughesnet is pretty terrible. You can get good sat Internet, but its reeeeaaaallllyyyy expensive. Startup cost alone can b over ten k, and like 2k a month for 256k of bandwidth.

Where are you located? Are there no other options?

I am west of willows, its hughes net, wildblue (who didnt want anymore customers), or dial up, nothing else up here. Supposedly wildblue is even worse though, if thats possible.

yikes, i feel your pain, wish they can just lay cable and give you a direct connection to their POP or CO. ouch... yeah the rest of the crowd is right, you're SOL since there isn't any other real alternatives....

sat internet sucks, but is the only game in town for those in remote areas, i was a cert hughsnet installer(even installed dish nets Pegasus back in the day) so i know your pain, and ever worse then the slow arse surfing wait till the hits the wall of "F.A.P." ..... no way around it the convenience + crappy service and price , oh and lets not forget the good ole "N.O.C." that assigns your sat and put you on a overloaded sat every chance they get ......

to be honest unles you really dont mind the overpriced monthly charges and rental/lease of the modems dial up sometimes is a better choice for the price .....

whats funny is i have fiber optics running along the side of my road and still only have a choice of sat,cell,or dial up on our trinity property ... the lines are there and run all the way to the coast but zero access to the public for the last 3-5 years

If you cant get Fiber, Copper Line Internet (DSL) or Cable Internet out where you live. You can see if there is WiSP's out in your area. WiSP aka for Wireless Internet Service Provider. I know plenty of people setup routers/wireless adapters to connect/ethernet bridge to routers miles away. Lookup WiSP on YouTube. You can find plenty of videos on WiSP's. How to set them up and such, even how they work. If you have a cellphone (depending on the network and your coverage) you can tether your Phone to your Computer via Wifi Tether/Barnacle Tether and get speeds of 2-3mb's on 3G (possibly faster) and from what I understand you can achieve up to 20mb's or something up there on 4G.

Clearwire operates on the same band that Sprint does. From what Clearwire has told me before, is Sprint leases their lines from Clearwire. I guess its Clearwire's Satellites

Ive had huges and wildblue in the past. Both are crap.


Switched to cell for a while, was better, and I was lucky enough to tether off my unlimited data plan smart phone.

Is there any Verizon 4G coverage at your local? If there is, you can get a MiFi and use that for your home.

I had wildblue and it was better than dial up. Horrible for gaming because of the lag.
