    Ubuntu 11.10 Unity

    BEGIN RANT

I have been a computer geek before many of you were born. I cut my computing teeth on punched cards and magnetic tape reels. I've readily learned and adapted to new operating systems from CPM, DEC VAX/VMS through windows, mac OS, unix, and since 2005 I have gone totally linux at home using ubuntu. I like to use the latest stuff and upgrade frequently to get the latest goodies, and I don't have a problem learning and using new stuff.

I have to say I have never directed so much foul language toward my screen as the day I installed Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) on my Thinkpad.

I tried the Unity interface for a few days and it simply chafed me the wrong way in too many places. I had my Gnome desktop set up just the way I liked it, it was efficient and fast and I could get my work done quickly. Unity seems to just "get in the way" wherever possible. Seriously what the heck were they thinking?

Now I'm looking for a new distro. Currently I've got Fedora 15 running and the Gnome 3 looks quite usable, not as customizable as previous Gnomes... but I've pulled my hair out and can't get any printers installed (Hey I was a software engineer for many years, it's 2011 now we should not have to compile and debug the printer drivers for hours, they should just freakin' work).

So after I hit "submit" here I'm going to reboot and quietly try Mint. My voice is hoarse from shouting curses at Ubuntu/Canonical. If Mint doesn't do it (yes I know Mint's based on Ubuntu) I'm seriously considering jumping back to Windows again. I hate to have to deal with the whole virus/malware mess and lose the power of linux under the hood but dang, I want to just plug in my printers and have them work.

    END RANT

Agreed... I just don't get what they're trying to do with unity.

I agree a million percent. I upgraded a VM and thought the new interface was interesting, but I wanted to move the bar to the bottom of the screen. Nope. Apparently, it's a "bug" that they are not going to fix. This goes against everything I like about Linux. Fortunately, I had a snapshot from before the upgrade so I rolled it back.

Got Mint 11 installed and updated in record time, including a snack break and packing up a few orders. That was the easiest linux install I've ever done. Everything worked. Now to install the printers... wish me luck!

I cant believe they removed the option to go back to the classic desktop. IMO they just ruined ubuntu forever...

I like mint, I will be putting it on my hp later tonight.

Before I forget... Got the printer going in about 3 minutes. So far Mint 11 is a winner...

Ever since they started using unity and gnome3 I've gone with XFCE (http://www.xubuntu.org/). Odd that you're having trouble with print drivers, I've always had good luck with printers in Fedora, better then Ubuntu. Mint is really good to, I know a few people have switched to that.

Never cared for any of the Ubuntu stuff... I see what they are trying to accomplish and everything, its just not for me. I'm from more of a SCO, IRIX, type background... At work we use CentOS for everything. Ubuntu just has that Fisher Price feeling for me... Its cool people are using it and not crapintosh or windows though.

Why not just get a real linux distro and use Slackware? Not the gimmicky "lets turn linux into OSX" Ubuntu BS.

While I could indeed use slackware, for my current work I need an OS that is ready to go right out of the box without spending any time in configuration and tweaking. Canonical's current trend of turning linux into OSX does suck. My relatively non-technical mother-in-law is very happy with Unity (I convinced her to go to Ubuntu from OSX a couple years ago and she's quite happy to be "back" to a familiar user interface)

Mint is doing the job for now. But I've been messing with Fedora 15 in Virtualbox and that may be the way going forward.

If you can slackware is the way to go. Definitely learn how to use linux using that distro.

RPM distros give me indigestion. I have been hearing a lot about F15 though I might just give it a whirl this weekend. You'd be surprised though... a default full Slack install sets up pretty automagically these days if you're down with KDE. While Ubuntu has done much to further the "linux desktop for the masses" cause, it's still a shame of a distro. That's just me though... I spend about 90% of my computer time on the command line anyway.

Oh hey check it - there's a UNIXbeard emoticon!

11.10 kills battery power, abuses your CPU, and you get nothing better than 11.04

Thats what we use to get crap done!

I am NOT a fan of GUIs. Sure they are pretty, but not efficient!
