If you only access the start-up tab as I described no damage can ever occur. Once you go into Services and other tabs things can go bad.

Start-Up items that are deselected still boot when needed, they just don't load at START-UP.

Yes generally speaking IF ONLY they were to access the Startup Group Tab.. Thats why I just said MSCONFIG can cause damages if misconfigured and if someone with little to no skill in that area.

In Run type "msconfig"

Go to Start Up

see whats checked, and uncheck everything that isn't necessary.

Am I confused or are you continually addressing a problem that never existed unless the OP decided to take creative instructions that were not given.

Through MSCONFIG, if the OP decided to check things that shouldn't be checked, I just wanted to make sure he didn't screw up his computer. Is it true or is it not true that you can cause system errors through MSCONFIG. If the OP is asking for help here about his slow computer and you inform him to see whats checked and uncheck everything that isn't necessary. Do you think he'd know what things to uncheck that wasn't necessary? *smh*

a few other tricks i use for win7 are to disable system restore (crap is worthless anyways) and turn off windows indexing. unless you search for files often its pretty much pointless.

your system specs seem good, however what video card are you running? I have found that any of the basic ones, Intel gma, or radeon built in, HATE windows Aero. If you have a dedicated card it shouldn't be a problem.

and yes, disable all the start up items you don't use, they will list their path, and you can see that things like msn messenger really don't need to be running at start up. Also remove anything from programs that you don't use. go crazy and get rid of everything (leave office, and wireless suites) you can always reinstall it later.

Ok maybe not everything, but you looking in my add remove programs I know every piece of software in there because i put it there.

Avira, and Avast are some of the fastest antivirus software available (in the free realm), I like comodo as a firewall (its light too) and malware bytes for the rest.

The windows firewall is a fallacy, it does not monitor outbound activity(by default), only inbound, so unless your going to put in rules for outbound connections, something like comodo is a better choice, its decent at detecting malicious inbound or outbound connections.

+1 on disabling system restore and windows indexing
if you feel confident with your abilities you can also disable services you don't need. heres a list of a few you can safely disable:

One more for looking at the programs in msconfig, startup.
I take out all Adobe programs - they all go to look for updates at startup to see if there are updates. If not in startup group, the programs will load when you need them.
For instance if you open a PDF, then the Adobe reader will start.

Also when you load any new programs, many will default to add to start group.

Also uninstall any Internet Toolbars... They're usually spam or bloatware/adware anyways. Such as the Ask Toolbar. I always check "Custom" when I install a program
