i thought this was pretty hilarious. linux has been mainstream for atleast 10 years now. they've taken over the workplace and if you havent noticed, you are blind. anything you can find on windows or mac, has a linux port or variant already. as for the OP and his two threads based on this same exact question. everything you need to know, is a simple google search away and anything you cant google, is a linux forum away.

No, in this case he is right. Netflix and Itunes do not operate under wine. You need to have a windows/mac box for Silverlight for nextflix. There are no "linux alternatives" for both because they are proprietary DRM systems. It is a real ***** actually.

Don't mean to rag on you so hard man. One of the side effects of being in IS for so many years we get mean.

So I do apologize for the heavy hand. Linux really does require a significant effort (even ubuntu) in order to make a "fully functional multimedia" system out of it.

After a while you learn about the search terms, fex, google top 10 things to install on ubuntu 11.04. That will get your multi-media up and running.

As for snort, honestly? It is more trouble than it is worth. I used to use Snort under Gentoo years ago where I had it streaming literally as a terminal output background, color coded. Information OVERLOAD. After a while you just ignore it.

One of the most important thing in linux, even ubuntu 11.04. Disable remote desktop and SSH unless you have some need for it. SSH is the big one, it is the prime intrusion vector. Linux does not have any current web-delivered hacks like windows and mac. The linux system is inherently resilient to that sort of attack. The only reason to run Snort is if you are the DMZ, or are otherwise directly connected in. You have no vectors for attack with SSH and RDC off. You must download the attackers file and then type in your super user password to give it any kind of power on your system, other than to annoy you.

This isnt windows. Is your network under attack constantly? There really needs to be a pressing reason to run Snort or you get info-overload.

I gave you some space but you continue an attack?

You failed to ask a question that was answerable. You still have yet to ask us one we can help you with. A link was provided to give you a complete tutorial. Was that insufficient? If so in what way did it fall short. In what specific area do you still need assistance. I can be nice or I can be mean, now I can be mean. Linux has a future with people who THINK and don't expect the world to be handed to them on a silver platter you lax, lazy, noobsack. Even if you ever ask a question in this forum again I will not help you.

Mostly because you are an idiot who can't formulate a reasonable question and more, Patriotic Rainbow Dash is a Pegasus. You insist on calling it fruity, do you have a small penis? Do soft and feminine things offend you because you lack the masculinity and self assurance to not feel threatened.

Right now you remind me nothing more than one of the teen-age knuckle headed students who I give hell every day and get such a kick out of impinging their miniscule easily bruised ego.

Linux is just not your cup of tea and no, we don't need you as a user. Come again when you grow up a little.

that makes 100% sense, why you are asking a niche specific question on an unrelated forum. LOL

Wow, it's thick in here on both ends. One guy attacks on how bad blackhat is while admitting that is where he started too ... and the other guy can't ask the question well enough to make sense, and then goes on the counter-attack.

This is Calguns guys, give each other a break.

loek, I don't think the internet is a good resource for you right now. With very little knowledge on the subject, you still need to ask questions the right way and present what you have actually tried.

I'd recommend picking up a Linux book. Order it, or for instant gratifications, most big book stores have them. Get comfortable getting around your system in the terminal, and then it will be much easier to focus on specifics, like security if that is your interest. I think then the internet will become a more useful resource for you as well... if you take more care in asking questions.

What you're wanting to do isn't something that is easy to achieve overnight. Even if you did ask the question just right, it would be hard to answer with all the variables involved.

If you can't see yourself spending hours at a time over many nights to be successful and actually understand what you're doing, then it's probably not for you.

If on the other hand, you are motivated to put in the time to learn, then it's pretty rewarding, and fun too . You gotta put in the time though. Having a real goal is the best motivator to self learning.

                  Good luck.

wow this thread delivers. i feel like we are in the off-topic section right now with all this drama.

loekanle....if you are serious about linux, you should really buy a couple books and do a lot of reading online. none of us learned it overnight or became experts by simply asking questions on forums. it takes lots of reading as well as usage to get the hang of it, but if you are serious, its worth the investment.

(one of the best linux books out there IMHO)

(a book more specific to your needs)
If you are a network administrator, you're under a lot of pressure to ensure that mission-critical systems are completely safe from malicious code, buffer overflows, stealth port... - Selection from Snort Cookbook [Book]

there are plenty of tech savvy people on calguns, but that covers a wide variety of technology. it would be wise to consider the advice given by those here who do have the answers specific to your topic so that you can ask more descriptive questions in the future(and get answers). you have to understand that being a sys-admin requires one to deal with lots of bonehead users, their ignorant mistakes, and silly questions(that is not directed towards you in particular)...if you ever worked in the field you would better understand why some come off the way they do. that being said.

run snort in the terminal....is it working? you said that clicking the icon does nothing. this is part of your fail. you get much more info(debugging) when running things from the cli. it usually returns and error that can better help you research your problem.

[EDIT]glockblocker kind of said what i said, but beat me to it.

You're trying to get help here and basicially threatening another member? If you want help, a little humility will go a long way. Also what else would go a long way is doing some research on your own, and then coming back asking specific detailed questions about the exact problems you're having.
                      An example would be,
"I've got snort installed and I want to configure it to log to a Mysql DB. I'm having this error
                      Code:
                      Error pasted here
when trying to import the sql file to create the tables. has anyone seen this, yes i've googled it and nothing that i've found so far works. Any help is apprecaited".

See if you started this thread like that, i'm sure you would have gotten more help. Instead you start a horribly vauge thread, and start bashing and threatening people who could probably be of assistance to you. I was in your shoes when I was about 13 or 14yrs old and learning linux. I had help from friends and some IRC channels. People aren't going to type the commands in for you. They will help push you in the right direction but expect you to do the research and actually LEARN this stuff yourself. If you want someone to make a step by step list for you, then format your PC and go back to Windows XP. There are many how-to's on this topic. Look at Snort.org in their docs section. My how-to for installing Snort, Mysql, Base, etc, on Gentoo was up there for years.
