    Dell Inspiron 6000(?)

Ok, so it died and I'm trying to resurrect it. I'm certain that the AC port has to be changed out, since it wouldn't hold a charge even when plugged in and the battery is pretty new. I found a video on youtube for dismantling it and started taking it apart. Well, I am not having luck in finding time to finish it and would like to know if anyone can recommend a place in the SF Bay area that can change out the part and put it back together without charging a small fortune? Preferably on the peninsula in SF or San Mateo County.

Most places recommend changing out the mother board, common problem with the 6000 series.

i dont think dell even sells the ac port, they will want to sell you a whole mobo.

You can't just buy the A/C port. I had the same thing break on my latitude c600 some years back. The only way to fix it was to replace the motherboard. Since I didn't want to shell out the money for a new motherboard I took it apart and found that the pins were broken. I took a chance and resoldered them back and it work for another 6 months before it died on me again and that's when I bought a new laptop.

I appreciate the input everyone. So since my plan is going to cost a lot more than I had hoped (having to replace the motherboard and all), does anyone know where in the SF Bay Area I can take the Dell to retrieve any files (docs and PDFs) that may still be on the laptop? and to have the hard drive destroyed?

I think I got everything off of it before it finally died, but I want to make sure.

You can try to recover your files by placing the hard drive into a usb caddy and access the files using another computer. Something like this http://www.frys.com/product/4289084

Usually the laptop is secured via screws. Remove the screws and the drive just slides out. Once you do that you can use a USB to SAT/IDE adapter and plug it into your other computer and it will come up as an additional drive. Open the drive up and start copying whatever you still need onto your other computer.
