Win 7 hangs, can run fine in safe mode. Hopefully fixed!

    On a Toshiba Satellite T235D - AMD Turion II - 4 GB Ram - Win 7 Home Premium 64bit - SP1

For a few weeks I have noticed FF will hang randomly. Window would give (not Responding) Occasionally other programs would hang. The hang would last a few seconds to no longer than a 30 seconds. Today it hung permanent. It would freeze indefinite. I am running in Safe Mode. Tried a system restore and it hung also. AVG failed and gave "unspecified error occurred in AVG" Right now I ran sfc/ scannow and it came back with zero integrity violations.

    Any other suggestions?

did it display those symptoms before installing Firefox?

try uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox, also try the same with AVG

I would start with another system restore. Don't install any other applications other than what gets installed from the restore.

See if the system hangs or freezes. If it does, I would start to think it might be hardware related.

If it doesn't hang or freeze, start with the Windows updates. Only do the critical updates first.

Again test for hanging or freezing.

After that, install each piece of software one at a time, testing between each installation.

That's how I would troubleshoot it.

Windows has no more restore points. It wont restore.

One thing I notice once I start Windows in normal mode. The HD light runs constant, something is tying up all the drive. This is something that never happened in the past.

Could be a bad HDD too.

Did you run system restore in safe-mode? Try that if not.

And FF and AVG are not the same as a year ago if you have updates on.

That happened to me. I went back to earlier versions of Firefox, which solved the problem. Firefox has glitches. Check out some discussion on the subject:

              Good luck.

If the HD light is constant then I agree it's a bad HD. It would be great if you could get your hands on another HD to test. Since your recovery points are gone, did you happen to make System Recovery Disks?

If not, you can contact tech support and they'll send you the setup disks. Hopefully you don't have to pay for S&H.

If you can get your hands on another HD and the System Recovery Disks, you should be up and running in no time.

Ran chkdsk/r and found 4 bad sectors one was in AVG. All 4 repaired.

Pulled out an old Toshiba laptop to do some more research online. I went to plug in the old one and it would not power up. I realized I was connecting it to the new power adapter. The new Toshiba was running on the old power adapter that was a higher amp adapter. Then I found PS's problems can cause Windows to hang.

So either chkdsk or the PS fixed it. It running now! Time for a restore point and backup!

It makes me wonder about a bad drive on a Dell laptop that I might have killed by using a generic adapter...Hmmmm...

Good job. Glad that it was only some bad sectors that not the entire disk.
