My 5 year old Compaq developed a problem when the power cord melted to the power port. When I tried to remove it, the center post came out with the plug.
Knowing I needed a new board, I took the back off my laptop, found the board number, and scouted the internet until I found a new one for a reasonable price. HP wanted about $250 for a board, I found a new one for about $76 +S&H.
Installed it, and at the same time, I added some heat paste between the processor and the heat sink, since HP doesn't use any.
Computor is running fast now. I had overheated it a couple of years ago, and sent it back to HP for repair($350 for a 90 day warranty) and after the fix the thing didn't run as fast as it used to.
Well, now it is back to full speed. Not only that, but the DVD Rom drive used to pop open at odd moments, or not open when it needed to. It no longer seems to do that. Drive seems to be working just fine.
Only difference is that the actual model number was a V2615US and it now reads it as a V2617US. I think I can live with that.
