      yes, backup immediately

new HDD is cheaper than new laptop, if you were local I'd do the swap for a beer or three...

+1! You can buy a nice notebook hard drive for less than $100. That assumes that you can a reasonably modern notebook with a SATA drive.

If you get to it in time you can even use an Apricorn drive cloning kit ($35) to clone the old drive to the new one. Whatever you do, other than backing up the data, stop using the computer until you replace the drive.

Once you hear audible sounds of the HDD your first move should be backup your data immediately. You can get 2TB external HDD for $100.

unplug the hardrive, and get one. Don't forget to transfer your data asap. Once you can't access your data, the cost will be higher to get them back.
I got this from amazon, hitachi is still the best.

also if you are going to replace hardrive make sure you have the os installation disks on hand, or contact your manufacturer for copies of your installation disks. some companies dont come with disks because they put the information on a partition on your hard drive, which in this case will not help you out. good luck

I backed everything up onto a portable external drive.

The laptop is running Vista but I don't have any installation discs from HP.

What do I do once I swap in the hard drive...?

its the newest and fastest HDD that is at the 100 dollar mark. I got the SSD from 2 gens ago, vertex LE 100bg, its 2 times faster then mine. 60GB will be enough for you on a laptop.

its like putting a corvette engine in a motor bike.

                        pros:
                        faster then mechanical HDD
response time is so low you can start opening programs and playing games once you see the desktop and no delays.
longer life then mechanical, no moving parts.
                        reduced weight for mobility.

                        cons:
                        per/GB costs a lot

you could also look on Craigslist for some Vista install disks

Do a back-up ASAP, your drive is usually the first thing that goes on a PC.

If you can't make the recovery disc then try drive cloning kit. I've had good luck with Apricorn's kits and this one is only $19. You connect it to a USB port and the new drive and run the included software and it clones the old drive to the new drive.
