    Future of Operating Systems Rant

Due to my recent... issues with my computer it has exposed me to where the OS world is going. Something I had not previously been tracking with any kind of interest. No, Sir, I don't like it (Mr Horse Voice).

I will admit that I am more of a "power user" and that the future UI Design Concepts focus on the Joe and Jane Average.. but why am I forced into that box with them?

If you have not been following the trends either then let me regal you. Everyone is going "smartphone" UI for their future OS's and GUIs... well except KDE as far as I can tell. The embodying concept is the same as on Smart Phones.. WE OWN YOU and YOUR DEVICE. No customization or if it is there it is hidden and buried.. seriously why have it if you then hide it.. oh it is for the CHOSEN people.

To be frank I don't like someone else dictating to me what I can and cannot do on my computer. Even with all of its restrictions Win7 is still a very open OS. Now Ubuntu going Unity, Gnome 3 removing ALL potential to customize, Windows 8 (uggggggh). Everything is locked down, controlled, and served to you as they see fit. All of them now operate APPSTORES. I understand the driving concept though. If you lock everything down you can essentially drive people towards your paid service APPSTORE and to avoid it they have to figure out a work-around. Since Joe and Jane Average don't think like that you have a new captive audience who will do it your way and funnel money into your coffers. I have no problem with making money, I have a problem with people locking down my interface. I want it MY WAY.

If the future is the Smartphone type UI's then I don't want to Compute any longer (Farnsworth Voice). Mostly because I know what the next step is, limited development and "approved apps". Most people don't know that in their CPU is a system by which one can actually prevent applications from running. No one uses it as of yet, but it has been there, quietly, for a long time.

I hate tablet computing and Smartphones not because they are not useful in their proper place but because of how controlled they are. My Droid2 was unrooted for all of 15 minutes after I bought it.. the time it took to drive home and plug it into my computer to be hacked. Sure Freedom has its risks and many of the locked down interfaces claim better security but as anyone who knows anything about computer security knows, that is just an illusion. The same kind of illusion held by socker moms and the Brady Bunch. SO maybe my over offense over the future of computing is not the way it works but the driving force behind it. The same social concepts that are driving our society into the ground and down a dark path. Seeing the computer world going the same direction is angering. If there is anything I hate openly it is just that, the Illusion, the Grand One that everyone is so desperately clinging to and brining their own destruction and mine with them. The sad part is that soon I won't have a choice of alternate OS and UI that offers freedom and usability. Since everyone, even the open source guys, have a massive hard-on for the New Computing World Order.
...but their exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.

Sounds like you're looking at the wrong "open source guys".

Open source is not "free software". Find true free software and be liberated.

    FREE as in LIBRE, not
    FREE as in BEER

      Don't upgrade.

      -or-

Open 'Meaty-btzsoft'. I will try your OS. If you become the next Bill Gates, remember your friends here on Calguns.

P.S. I will admit, I was kind of oblivious to the future (driving products and features with App stores). Thanks for waking me up.

I have been a developer for 30 years. In my time at the kybd it has often occured to me that the main problem with computers in the UI. Once we have the cpu power and decent algorythms to provide true speech processing (that time is rapidly approaching) most of the PC design will change. Most of the uses of PC's do not require a screen or Keyboard/mouse except to overcome the limitations of humans.
The current discussion is about changes to the UI and discomfort with the new "ideas". Wait a few years my friend, you won't recognize computing...

You can use any window manager or desktop environment you like in Linux or BSD. You are not forced to use any one GUI.

If you're a real "power user", then why are you using Ubuntu? Why don't you try Slackware or Gentoo or one of the BSD's?

Funny i just read an article about this earlier. I really don't mind Gnome-3 as I can still run any app I want to, but understand your frustration. KDE is still "friendly" and they may stay that way considering that Gnome-3 is more restrictive on Dekstop customization, but I would also recommend others, like XFCE or FVWM.

Although I wouldn't call it the future of operating systems, merely the future of desktops and user interfaces. As long as linux is around there will be a fully customizable desktop.

Actually they are adding in tablet interfaces. KDE is doing this too. But guess what, you can disable this stuff on each OS.

One of the most significant changes in KDE 4.7 is support for OpenGL ES 2.0 in the KWin window manager. This new rendering backend will open the door for running a hardware-accelerated KDE environment with visual effects on mobile devices-such as tablets with a Tegra 2 chipset. KWin has also received a number of optimizations that will boost performance.

Nobody has locked anything down, in fact there is nothing forcing you to use any of the app stores.

If the future is the Smartphone type UI's then I don't want to Compute any longer (Farnsworth Voice).
You are freaking out over nothing, there is nothing forcing you to use the tablet interface (it's not a smartphone interface) on any OS.

{QUOTE] Mostly because I know what the next step is, limited development and "approved apps". [/QUOTE]

I can see Apple going in this direction, but then again nobody is forcing you to buy Apple's products.

Most people don't know that in their CPU is a system by which one can actually prevent applications from running. No one uses it as of yet, but it has been there, quietly, for a long time.
Take your tinfoil hat off, although this may be possible with TPM and Intels trusted execution instructions you will not find it in any consumer level systems. This is only possible with Intel vPro CPUs, and even then you have to enable it in the BIOS among other things in order to use it.

I hate tablet computing and Smartphones not because they are not useful in their proper place but because of how controlled they are.
Then don't use them, simple as that.

My Droid2 was unrooted for all of 15 minutes after I bought it.. the time it took to drive home and plug it into my computer to be hacked.
If you would have done the slightest bit of research before buying that phone you would know that Motorola does everything they can to prevent you from rooting their devices and installing custom ROMs. In fact you would know that you have to root it every time you reboot the device.

Sure Freedom has its risks and many of the locked down interfaces claim better security but as anyone who knows anything about computer security knows, that is just an illusion.
No it is not an illusion, you have to balance security with usability. The more locked down a system is the more secure it is, but the tradeoff is a loss of usability for the end user.

The same kind of illusion held by socker moms and the Brady Bunch. SO maybe my over offense over the future of computing is not the way it works but the driving force behind it. The same social concepts that are driving our society into the ground and down a dark path. Seeing the computer world going the same direction is angering. Nobody forces you to upgrade. If you are happy with the current UI, stick with it.

A bit paranoid? The UI has nothing to do with owning you. The information mining that's come to light lately with iOS and Android have nothing to do with the UI.

You sound like an old fart refusing to learn new things. I bet you felt frustrated when DOS5 was replaced with Windows. I wish CPM was never replaced by DOS (NOT!)

And yes, I do find Gnome 3 a sharp departure from Gnome 2 and earlier. I may even stick to Fedora 14 for a while for some of my applications. But for a user desktop application Gnome 3 is nice, clean, and easy.

It's a disturbing trend, but this is what hackers are for. Someone will always have a way to get around everything, the only trick is finding it.
And I hate to disrespect established members when I'm this new, but Satex, come on man. It's like if everyone stopped producing revolvers. You'd have to start reloading after everyone shuts down their production lines, then they'd stop producing brass for revolver rounds, etc. until you're practically forced to switch to an autoloader. If something isn't updated in computing, it might as well be dead.
Calling it "Commiefornia" really isn't helping.
