    Are you using a proxy?

Can you get on the inet at all with that computer? Do you have alternate browsers? unless you're running Linux you probably still have IE(shudder) try that.

If neither of those work, reboot to safe mode with networking and turn off proxy in firefox.

IE doesn't work either. I really only have a vague idea of what a proxy is, and if I'm running one it isn't on purpose and i have no clue how to change proxy settings. The GF's puter works fine so i know it's not an issue with the ISP.

          In Firefox go:

          Tools
          Options
          Advanced
          Network
          Settings

          No Proxy.

I'd download Comodo Anti-Virus and run a scan. Maybe attack it with some Eset Nod 32 if changing proxy settings doesn't work.

okay, so that makes firefox work, but IE is still not workin. I don't use it but I'd sure like to know why. How did the settings change in the first place. what exactly is a proxy and why was it stopping my firefox from working?

thanks for all the help thus far.

              Proxy Server

Basically your computer interacts with a lot of other computers (servers) while on the inet right? A proxy takes a request made from your computer and searches it on the "other computers", comes up with the best answers and gives them back to your computer. Firefox sets up the proxy settings automatically. The virus was preventing your computer from connecting to your proxy. Proxys are not totally necessary but it is a good thing to have.

As long as Firefox works... don't worry about IE. Download Malwarebytes (after uninstalling or disabling any other Anti-virus software), run a system scan, if nothing pops up, run the scan in safe mode and deal with any thing accordingly, re-boot Firefox and turn your proxy back on. It should work

If nothing pops up on the virus scans, then there will be more stuff to do but for now just do the bold

Don't have or use IE, but if you open a Google window and search for the error message IE gives, you often will get useful information.
