I remember reading it in Maximum PC mag, the adapter just links it like a RAID 0 and it moves the system files to the SSD over time and most used files. No formatting required.

Anyone got a link to that?

That's a new one on me. My notebook has a function like that built into it and Seagate makes a hybrid notebook hard drive that does that internally. It's supposed to be pretty fast but not all that reliable (its a Seagate). If you're building a new system there are motherboards that have their own on-board mini-SSD that does what you want as well.

I'm just not sure how well what you want to do could work because it's likely TRIM wouldn't work. When installing an SSD in your current system you'll want to do a clean Windows install and not drive cloning so that TRIM works properly. Otherwise that SSD will start slowing way down. The BIOS should to be set for AHCI and Window needs to detect an SSD during the install and that means an up to date version of Windows.

Here are some other miscellaneous tips.
An SSD drive is a worthwhile investment , but like any storage device, it can fail. In fact, failing isn't that uncommon . As with your spinning dri

Cloning a drive to an SSD has no effect on TRIM, you just need to make sure that the SSD is either brand new or has had a secure erase done to it so that the alignment is correct. Just be sure to run the Windows Experience Index benchmark after cloning to the SSD and Windows 7 will know it is on an SSD and will change settings accordingly.

Yeah, you two are not even close but cloning the drive is a great idea. I just didn't think of that.

First I need to get approval to install vista or win7, its a work laptop.

Sandy Bridge laptops have what Intel calls "Smart Response", it lets you use a SSD and HDD in a hybrid setup. The desktop version supports this too although I'm not sure if all the Sandy Bridge desktop chipsets do.

I'm using an existing work laptop.

The device supports 3.5" HDDs only.

Well that sucks, i guess i can close the HDD to a SSD. I'll see next week if my manager will let me upgrade to windows 7 or at least vista.
