Up an running OK now- Help in OC with a browser re-direct on search

*** Just an update, another generous Calgunner got it fixed for me.... thanks for all of the help!

I have been having some PC problems over the past 30-45 days and yesterday it turned into a REAL problem. Upon a search in Mozilla or IE, I get redirected to another search page, my Favorites were deleted as well as my Outlook Express icon.

I'm not much of a computer guy, but I tried running malwarebytes, it found and deleted 3 files, but still, I am having an issue.

Anybody in OC want a job this weekend getting this cleaned up before I have to take it in to a store on Tuesday?

    I could use the help.

Mr. Duck, I have been having the exact same problem the past couple of weeks. I think it was prolly a link we clicked on here. All my searches come up with "scour".

Anyway, I just went back and did a system restore and it seemed to get rid of the problem.
      good luck,
      Rio

          Sounds like a browser hijacker.

System restore works too - Go back to the point before you started encountering problems -

Uninstall any helpers or browser bars by going to start-control panel - add/remove software.

make sure you uninstall anything made by Yahoo as well. I'm betting you've got a virus though and I don't play with those... back up data to USB, wipe hard drive, re-install OS & apps & patches. Takes on average about 6 hours on a Microshaft box. Takes 30 minutes on a Linux box.

Try running through the fix here - sounds exactly like the problem I saw here that combofix took care of. Take a good look at the instructions before you begin, or have the instructions running on another computer so you can follow along. Malwarebytes would fix some symptoms but did not fix the infection for me.

ETA: there is a real bastard of an infection getting started - creating a pretty good size botnet that may be related to this infection - more here

Those redirects are a pain to fix. I hope you get it fixed. I went extreme and reformatted when I had that issue.

ComboFix for sure, I have used it for many clients' computers.

Run "CW Shredder" and "Malwarebytes". Both are free to download. Together, they will zap any browser redirectors.

That fix can be an adventure, from what I just read.

On a clean machine, search for 'redirect scour'. Lots of info out there.

                          Yup.

I got it from that link to female bodybuilders back at the end of May.

Had the TDSS Rootkit, PageRage redirect, and two other trojans.
Once I got the rootkit cleaned, everything else was in the wide open, but I did have to boot into safe mode and run the command line AVG as well as Malwarebytes and Spybot to clean everything.

I was offline for over 16 hours.

combofix + tdsskiller + hitman pro = pretty good chance of fixing your problem.
