    ATT DSL Service;Phone very noisy--Help!

A friend of mine has ATT phone service with DSL. DSL filters are installed on the phone but the phone line is still pretty noisy. This wasn't a problem before the DSL was added.

Are there better DSL filters? Any other suggestions?

Filters may be reversed. Make sure each line is in the correct spot on every filter.

Mine still has a some noise, I just changed the cabling in the house and it cleaned it up, but there is still just a bit of noise. Try getting new filters.

Home built in 1978, I think. And, no easy was to run new cabling other than surface wiring.

Double check the filters like other people said.

Also, reterminate the phone jacks (if you can). I had really crappy phone jacks in the condo I'm living in which I had to reterm in order to DSL to even work. Also, you'll want to take a look at all the jacks in the house. Often they'll be daisy-chained together (and not necessarily in a way that makes sense), and if the splicing isn't done right, you'll encounter a bunch of problems.

It could jsut be that ATT sucks as well. They are terrible, my DSL is so slow when it's working at all.

Call and ask for repair. No use guessing about it. A technician will know what the problem is when they comes out to physically check.

I've had my ATT DSL for 11 years here in L.A. and in Sacramento, it's only been down for three or four days total in that time. I can get a constant 3+ MB/S which is the advertised max for me.

It depends how far you are from their switching station, both locations for me were between half mile and one mile distance from the stations. I think 17,000 feet is the limit for ADSL. The further away from the station, the more signal loss.

This is good recommendation. I too have ATT wire phone line (for home alarm) and it has DSL connection service on it. Some times, due to problems, I will get a lot of interference on the phone and it will also disrupt the DSL service (I don't normally use that phone, but I always check with a phone 1st when my DSL service is interrupted). If you pick up the phone and it has a lot of interference on it instead of a clean dial tone, call ATT.

If the problem isn't due to the wires in the house, they will fix it for free. If the problem is in your house there will be a charge unless you have paid of their maintenance plan. I'll get the phone lines rewired in the house if that is the problem.

You can install a DSL "splitter" at the NID. The splitter is essentially a whole house filter for the phone lines and eliminates having to deal with the individual filters. It would require a dedicated cable from the splitter to the DSL modem, though.

As others have suggested, call AT&T and have them send out a technician.

Don't forget the filter on the FAX or answering machine if there is one.
