    DSL Extreme

    Anybody here have DSL extreme?

I've had ATT and for as long as I remember, but recently I heard they were imposing caps on bandwidth I decided to eventually make the switch and DSL extreme. It's the only provider in my area besides ATT (yeah fun huh) and since my internet speed took a nose dive recently (I'm back at my "normal speed" they tried to appease me last time with higher speed at my current rates) I decided to go sooner than later.

So I called up ATT today, and duh they are closed for the holiday.

So that's that. Anybody have have anything to say about DSL Extreme's service or customer service? I hear it's good but you can never be too sure.... but anything should be better than ATT.

The used to be know for exceptionally good customer service and techs that were actually technical. But they were recently sold and moved their support center out of California so I have no idea how they are today. FWIW all they do is resell AT&T DSL under their own name (but with better support) so I'm not sure if they will have a cap or not.

Have you tried the ISP finder on DSLReports?

DSL Extreme offers more bandwidth for cheaper than AT&T. You get more for the money and from what I can tell the service works well because I've used it.

With that being said, I've had more problems with the actual physical AT&T phone lines out on the street than any internet service. When people complain about bad internet service they might not actually know the condition of the phone line that comes in.

Thanks for the info! I had no idea DSL Extreme got moved out of CA.

When I tried the ISP finder all I got was ATT =[. Went back to check Verizon and Time Warner, turns out that they provide service here now. Oh the choices.

Yeah I hear that too, about the phone lines. I last year when I was about to leave (having problems and bad rates) I had four different techs come out telling me it was something different or something on my end. I think they just got their crap together and fixed the phone line or something. My neighbor was having the same problems I was having - very very very low bandwidth during daytime.

I also had the problem that even though I was getting the 6.0 Mbps package, I only get about 5.1 or 5.2Mbps and once again they blame my hardware. Turns out my neighbors has the same problem.

Going to go see about Time Warner's packages. Their net is fast, but I don't know if I need the extra bandwidth for the extra cost.

        Thanks for the info guys!

I've been with dslextreme since 2004. They are a full service ISP. You get a free account to one of those superUsenet servers. If you have static IPs, you have access to their dns servers and can redirect the numbers to your url. You can do what you want unlike ATT. The only problems I've had were caused by the local PacBel phone guys making mistakes at the pole.

The new support center in the Philippines is a different matter. I switched from static to dynamic IP addressing in Jan. I have only two devices connected, my computer and my modem/router. But my dslextreme account shows me with three IP addresses. The girl at the other end whom I couldn't understand spent 15 minutes talking to her supervisor and then told me to call back just after 6 am. LOL Since it was an informational call, I just blew it off. Plus there is still the support guys on dslreports like George.

Those numbers look excellent for a 3m/512k line. The difference in the numbers is the atm network packet overhead. There is also a small signal degradation from those isolation filters you have to use if you don't have a whole house filter.

The ATT guy put in an entire house filter for free and it still didn't give me the entire speed. I'm at ~5.1Mbps and I'm supposed to get a full 6Mbps.

You too have excellent speeds...atm packet overhead is the rest and the phone companies like you to pay for it.... An exception is too far from the CO...and since you don't state your attenuation, I don't see anything here. Notice this all about the telco being indemnified. Just don't use the marketing speedtest sites.. They pass little ack packet to fool you..not enough to stink the room, but enough to impress your friends. It makes a substantial difference if you do a long term ftp, torrent, dc++, or usenet file transfer.

Lagg OMG in gaming , it wasn't a problem until Half-life changed the server code (1999,) then shots were made server based instead of client side. Before, if your ping was huge, you died. Now you kill low pingers. All the online fps game servers followed suit. Don't blame your death on your machine or isp, its the concept of making online fps fighting fair to new buyers of the game...skills, game hardware be damned.

                      So what was your problem?

And you don't understand why its taking so long to learn?

My parents have it down in Southern Cal and have had good luck with it. Very reliable.
