6 pin connector on MSI 890fxa-gd65?

My friend and I are building new systems. He's a little ahead of me right now, and managed to hook everything up. When he turns on the computer, everything spools up (CPU heatsink and GPU heatsink), but nothing displays. He's running a 6 core AMD Phenom II and a XFX 6950 with a 750W PSU. We've already tried plugging in an older video card to no avail. He believes it's because he doesn't have a 6 pin (2 rows of 3) connector that supposedly is supposed to give power to the CPU. IIRC, only the 4+4pin 12V CPU cable feeds power. The only 6 pin cable which powers the CPU I've heard of doesn't come with current PSUs, is 1 row and only exists on older AMD motherboards. Can anyone chime in as to what might be the problem?

There should be an 8 pin connector (green box), and the 6 pin connector (red box). Make sure you the 8 pin connector hooked up to your power supply. Some power supplies have a solid 8 pin connector, others have a pair of 4 pins. If it's a pair of 4 pins, the pair will be bundled together.

From what I can gather, the 6 pin connector (red box) is for PCI-e power which is optional. I would just ignore the 6 pin plug on the motherboard. If your video card requires more power (which the 6950 does), plug the PSU cables directly into the rear of the card. 6950s should have (2) 6-pin connectors on the card. Hook them both up.

i have the same board. the 2x3pin is for the pci-e power, which like NorcalEinstein said is optional but required for your card. the only 12v supply is the two 4pin (which both should be plugged in if the psu has both).

what are the other specs of your computer?

im having issues with mine after about 2-3months of use. comp just cutout and wont start. split second of power then shuts off. bought a corsair tx650 v2 to replace my old ocz psu and it comes up with the same issue. i hope the mobo isnt toast.

Well both of us got out system running (he eventually waved the white flag and went to Frys to have them assemble his). I'm running a XFX HD 6950 2GB, 8 gigs of ram, and 3.4 Ghz Phenom Quad core.
