    Solid State Drive, Wow!

I finally got my solid state drive working. I posted a thread the other day about not being able to put windows 7 on it. I tried about 100 different things and it finally worked.

For those that don't know a solid state drive is basically a flash hard drive with no moving parts. My computer now boots in under 10 seconds. iTunes opens in under 2 seconds.

I'm astonished at how fast this thing is. Anyone who is debating whether to get one, it's fast. Fast as hell. I don't think I'll ever go back.

Here's a pic of the PC I installed it in:

Boot times are also dependent on what hardware you have installed(raid controllers, NICs, etc.). For example the system I'm using right now has a pair of SSDs in RAID 0 as the boot drive, but the system still takes 60 seconds to boot(windows takes about 10 seconds to load once it gets to that point) due to the motherboard and other hardware involved.

Although personally I couldn't care less about boot times, since this system gets rebooted maybe once a week. The most important difference is application load times and performance of applications that use an on-disk cache.

+1 on SSD's. They are great even from going from raptors to them. You might want to do some cable management in there BTW.

Got one in my laptop - love it, boot times are blistering and I can bang it around w/o worry.

Fast huh? Put one on my laptop and boot time including application loading time has definitely decreased. Also the heat coming from the laptop has decreased.

The Intel SSDs we have at work have a failure rate of about 15%. I hope the second generation drives will be better.

Hitachi OEM'd to Dell for about 40% less cost - been happy so far, 2 years approx. 15% is awfully high, I hope you're getting them replaced!

I like this video. It does a good job of showing off SSD capability.

Sorry about the link, but I'm on my phone.

I'm running an old Q6600 quad cpu overclocked at 3.2ghz with 4gb of RAM. For an old PC, this thing is crazy fast.

I never turn my desktop off anyways since I torrent. Ive never had any issue with minute restart times and .5 second delay between tasks.

I think ill stick with regular harddrives that are half the price with 15x the storage space. Im glad you enjoy your SSD, I personally prefer getting more for less.
