Internet question for the tech guys

My internet DSL connection is giving me a hard time.

Youtube videos wont load after the first 15-30 seconds. When I attempt to download something, it starts to download and then it just gets stuck and stops downloading. I also have to restart my modem every 15-30 minutes because the internet goes down, internet goes back up after I restart the modem. This has been going on for about a week now.

I already called Verizon DSL, they said they would call me back. Verizon is starting to piss me off, unfortunately this is the ONLY internet option that I have out here in the countryside besides dial up.

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Not to make light of it... Verizon is your problem.

Since that's the only game in town, keep a log of all your problems and their responses. Get case # for tech calls. A friend of mine has what seems to be perpetual Verizon credits for an outrageous number of Verizon screw-ups. Don't let them off the hook when it comes time to pay for flawed service.

Or tethering if you get decent cell coverage.

Once you get on the phone, they will walk you through tests to determine if it is a line problem. If it is not they will try a modem next. Finally, if a new modem does nothing they may send a person on site or determine the problem has been on their end the whole time.

How much are you willing to pay because you can always get a T-1. About $400 a month.

I almost always have found the router to be a problem on connection speeds from DSL. Turn off all network devices including printers, wait 5 minutes and restart them starting with the modem, then the router then computing devices allowing tome for full boot of each until all are on then try it. If that doesn't get it, check your home for line noise and that could help.

            Couple of questions.

When did it start giving you issues?
Did you change or add anything to your network?
What have you done to troubleshoot?

Advice was given on resetting all the hardware which is fine.

Have you tried another system to rule out that.

Dial 611 and request a line test, they will run it. If they say you have line issues, which is likely, schedule a repair visit.

Bad advise, the way to determine if the router is the issue is to plug your system directly into the modem, in fact this is one of the things tech support will always tell you to do. It also does not matter what order you power the devices on, since the router will attempt to DHCP an IP from the modem until it receives one. I would also suggest resetting the router to factory defaults and flashing the most current firmware, this will give you any bug fixes.

Verizon called, they said that the speed is constant. I'm thinking a faulty modem?

                  1. About a week and a half ago.
                  2. Nothing changed or added
                  3. Restarted modem, unplugged and reconnected all cables.

                    couple of things:

                    1: Verizon DSL. Welcome to Hell ( i was a resident for 4years )
2: Modem / Router - likely not the issue, but if the router / modem is going south, then a symptom of it is as you describe - restarting it allows you normal use then it degrades... etc..etc..
3: Line noise - this is usually a problem from day one. If nothing has changed, this likely isnt it.

Its likely a combo of verizon f'ing up and your router/modem dying. As mentioned, get a log going of outages, helpdesk tickets, etc.. and demand prorated refunds.

all ISP's in the US are for the most part crap! Our .gov has allowed their monopolies, so we are left with over priced and unreliable services!

Get the same from Comcast, Surewest, Cox, and others.

i've actually had very good value and service from Cox. I do not share that opinion with Verizon.

Us (the taxpayers) also subsidized the build out of this infrastructure. Nice to see the have to take it in the behind, without lube. We were supposed to have nationwide home fiber-optic connections in most homes by now too, now most of that fiber is sitting unused.

Verizon fixed it. They said they changed some equipment and software at the central officer.
