    Access router password?

Is there a way that I can confirm what my "password" is for my router? Last month I upgraded up one level on my DSL through ATT. For some reason the upgrade knocked out the modem (Seimons 4100) and router (WRT54). I had to call ATT and after several transfers, I was fostered off on their 49.99 pay level of support. After a lengthy trial and error, we had the network up again, with new passwords, but it cost me 49.99 and two hours.

I wrote down the new passwords that the tech gave me, but am unsure of "case". In the next couple of days I'm going to set up a new printer (with wireless capability). So I don't get bogged down in mid-install I called ATT to confirm the password. Not pleasent! Level one tech support, cannot access the info. Level 2, tech lady stated she could confirm, but I'd have to go to level 3 tech and pay another 49.99 or 15.00 a month. Supervisor--none to be had--all in a meeting! NOT HAPPY!

Is there way to access the routers password or just do the ole trial and error method? ...yeah, I know pay the 50.00 bucks.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

I assume you're running Windows (if not, let me know, I'll give you another set of directions). Go to Start, run, type cmd and hit <Enter>. You'll get the command prompts. Type 'ipconfig' (without the parentheses). You'll see your IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. That default gateway is most likely your router.

Start a browser, go to that IP, and try your password. I believe, Linksys' default username is either 'admin', or no username, you just type the password.

I found this on line for a wrt54g router

This will reset the router to default settings and then you can reprogram after you login

      Or search lost password wrt54g

Thanks guys. (Yes, Windows XP). I'll give those a try, see what happens. Nick, what am I suppose to see after typing what I think is the password?

        Many thanks again.

ATT gave me that crap once too when initially setting up my own router. I told them never mind discontinue my service and 5 minutes later they were telling me the configuration settings.

I don't think they can charge you for resetting your password, thats ridiculous. If it's their router I'd just do the reset then tell them to configure it and give me a new password. That should not cost anything.

It depends on the area of the problem. I believe the OP stated his router, which is Linksys and his purchase, which becomes his issue because all ATT (or other providers) needs to offer is support for their own equipment.

That said, yes, I've told support the same for other situations and they end up comping the call.

That said, I hate ATT, they are such lairs. I transferred services from one location to another and had a date/time set. No one showed up and I had to authorize overtime to "wait" for the tech. The next day I call and they insisted a tech showed up and tested the circuit. After verifying the circuit ID, I couldn't get signal. I called again and they insisted I pay for rolling a truck. I told them to cancel service because I know a tech never showed up and they agreed to send someone out the next day. I ended up meeting the tech and he said he called me using my number on the work order, but I told him I never got a call. I verified the number and the whole "contact information" belonged to someone else! So, this guy is cool so we start talking and find out there is no signal at the building. There are two main circuits, A and B, and mine is on the B circuit. So he goes down the street and switches it from one binding post to another open post on the same circuit. NOTHING! He goes back down the street and switches circuits and I finally have signal. I told him ATTs 800# insisted everything was OK and I was to blame. He said it happens often and ended putting in a connection inside the building for free and gave me his company personal phone number in case I had further problems. Most techs I've run across are VERY helpful, unlike the sales reps and operators.

hk9166, oh, I had it written down but not sure of upper/lower case letters. As Desertdweller stated, I've always had good service from the folks in the field, but sales and a select number of tech operators is another story.

When I had AT&T with DSL I had a number of problems with the Siemons 4300B modem . Mostly because you/AT&T had to put it into "bridge" mode to work with a personal/home router. I now have AT&T U-verse still DSL but was sent a Motorola modem (much improved) plus I can look at what is happening to the modem by loging in. Yes upper and lower case does screw you up sometimes.
                          Take care
