Michigan state police downloading smart phone data during routine traffic stops.

Anyone know of a good Android encryption app?

The Android has its own combo lock but it doesn't encrypt it.

I actually wish someone could get their hands on one of those devices to do some testing. My Motorola Atrix for example, will not mount the phone's storage without me unlocking the device with my index fingerprint or PIN. So...would the device still be able to pull call logs, SMS logs, GPS, etc. from a locked device?

The article says it can get passed passwords and all that and is compatible with over 3000 different phone models.

I am sitting on my couch looking at a framed copy of the bill of rights on my wall. It's amazing we don't chain these tyrants down with the greatest governmental document ever written.

Hahahha This is sparking some interesting conversation with some mobile phone junkies/developers right now. I just tossed the article their way, and the idea just came back...

For the device to "unlock" a phone to get access to the info, it needs to know what kind of phone it is, so that it can call up the correct bypass method (which I'm learning might be provided by each cell mfg). This device ID is changeable, as a bunch of us have done it in the past when flashing custom mobile ROMs...but someone came up with the idea of an application to purposely change the device ID so that this downloader tool detects the wrong device, and uses the wrong bypass method.

Alllllll theory, no facts or any hard evidence at play here, we're just screwing around.

hopefully some group can make an app that will block this easily and even freeze up the device somehow.

The gov would probably charge you with felony vandalism.

Very interesting idea on an app that could throw the machine off
an app of that type does have my support

Any app that can encrypt and make a container file. A encrypted container file would not stop the dl of the media but it would stop any media from being viewed. They would have to brute force the container file to break into it. If you want to read up on encryption more go to http://www.truecrypt.org/ this is a PC app not cell phone.

I use a simliar cellbrite machine at work and I cannot access info without a password from the device so I'm not sure if they revised their machines.

How would a police officer even know you have a phone on you?

                          Police officer:
Do you have a phone on you that we can search for data?

                          Me:

                          silence...

I would like to see an app that if a device like that was used, the phone would attack it and encrypt all data on it, or wipe all data off the device.

I will let them take me to court and try to charge me with some kind of vandalism. I would fight that I was only protecting my 4th amendment rights and if that hadn't tried to violate them in the first place it never would have happened.

                              Screw them.

This really is becoming a police state and a police country. I sure hope the good officers that are out there start standing up against this kind of abuse and they start calling BS on some of this stuff.
                              1 Peter 3:15

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect

                              2 Corinthians 3:3
You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
