    My somewhat budget build

I'm going to list the hardware I purchased and the thought processes behind each piece and maybe next week when it's finished get some pictures up. I'd like some criticisms or any insight to some of the more "up there" technical aspects that I may have overlooked or misunderstood

    Case: Antec 300 Illusion
Probably one of the more superficial items (to an extent) in building your own computer, I went with a basic mid-tower that had 4 fans. I don't care much for flashy lights as I keep the tower behind a door.

    Motherboard (edit): ASUS M4N75TD:
I wanted a mobo w/ 2 PCI express slots for possible SLI running in the future. I also wanted firewire, AND DDR2 since I wanted to use my old ram that already had a sweet CAS latency of 2. I had to give up on the search though and settled with DDR3. (Couldn't find an asus board with iee, 2 pci slots, ddr2 that was in stock/ my price range)

CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 555:
3.20GHz, AM3, 6MB Cache, 2000MHz Bus. I was completely indecisive for a minute between 2 cores, 3 cores, aaah. Basically it came down to the fact that not many programs I run even use multiple cores (I play a 10 year old game), and I wont be multitasking much at all. So I went with a dual core with a 6mb cache =D. The thing about the higher core count in my price range was the worse cache. So in my opinion for what I do, less cores and more speed was a better choice.

GPU: EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 SSC+:
1GB GDDR5, 256-bit, 850mhz Core, 1700mhz Shader 3900mhz Memory, 336 Stream Processors. Oh wow, I must have looked at 30 or so video cards before deciding on this one. Back and forth between 2gb memory with lower core/shader/memory clocks, and 1gb memory and higher clock speeds. What settled this debate for me was a quick discussion with a buddy who pointed out that on the 2gb graphics card with lower bandwidth (256 bit was the only 2gb in my price range) there would be some bottlenecking. So I went with a 1gb card with better clock speeds, and if I ever go SLI it would be better in the long run to have two 1gb cards with their own 256-bit bus than trying to squeeze a single 2 gb card through one 256-bit bus.

    PSU: Raidmax 530w RX-530SS SLI/Crossfire:

This I had a little dilemma- I've heard alot of raidmax hate, but this one was right in my price range. If I do end up running SLI i'll probably switch it out but in the meantime anyone have any opinion on raidmax?

    RAM:
G.SKILL 2x2gb. 1333mhz. I went with the 7 CAS latency ones instead of the worse ones. Many people like their ddr3, I guess I'm just not into changing what already worked for me with a better cas.

I also went with Windows 7 x64, Seagate Barracuda hd, and an Asus dvd-rw drive.

Total including tax and shipping: 650

I got most of my hardware from tigerdirect. They're doing a free shipping deal to CA residents so go jump on it! Also no tax (edit: don't forget use tax... mumble) for us (unlike newegg, where I got some other things). Also look on ebay/craigslist, you'll find some good deals on new Ram.

There's always taxes. They're called Sales & Use taxes, and you're supposed to file them.

The list looks good, just make sure you get a nice power supply.

With that motherboard you should be able to unlock the other two cores on that CPU with a simple BIOS setting. Most all of the Phenom II 555 BE CPUs are just the 955 BE with two cores disabled, there is close to a 100% success rate unlocking these. You will notice a big performance boost in games if you do this. If you start getting lockups disable one core and you should be fine, most of the 555 BE CPUs that have unlocking issues will still allow you to use the 3rd core. It is rare that you will have unlock issues with these though. Read the motherboard manual for more info.

It's hilarious you just told me that because today I discovered this while reading my motherboard manual and found this:

AMD K10.5* Core & Cache Unlocking Guide *K10.5 includes Athlon II, Phenom II, & Sempron II CPU's Introduction Core unlocking of AMD chips has been a very hot topic of discussion. The possibility of spending a mere $100 dollars for a Phenom II X2/X3 chip and unlocking the disabled cores to yield...

The rest of my parts arrive tomorrow so Im going to give it a shot and test it's stability.

Hopefully you have the same luck as me. I had to get the 555 BE because all the quad cores were out of stock when I was building this and I didn't want to wait. Luckily it has been rock solid, even when I had overclocked it.

You bought a 60$ case, thats not budget! I was planning to get that case too though for my non so budget build.

My budget build 2 years ago was with a 30$ after rebate cool master case that really does a good job. everything green, lower power HD, 80+ PSU, on board gfx on mobo, I think it all came out to about 300ish. given the fact that its a media center type pc.

                currently running a asus p6t with i7 920 with 6gb ram.

New build is in the works with ASUS P6X58D Premium
                MSI GeForce GTX560

                everything else is being decided.

It is if you don't want your system to get hot, a $100+ case is not budget.

I did get lucky, running 4 cores right now. Tonight I'm going to do the Prime95 stress test, I'm pretty confident it will pass and the extra 2 cores will be stable to oc. Thanks for looking out

Heh, that is why on the thread title I did put "somewhat". And as Jday said, this case keeps it very very cool. The antec 300 "illusion" comes with 4 fans instead of 2- which I didn't completely understand as the antec 300 (not illusion) was 5 dollars more expensive.

I would definitely try building a super budget build just for the hell of it one day. Right now I've been playing with the gtx460 and it's pretty sweet, no doubt the 500 series will be amazing. On my asus board if I decide to run SLI though there will be no room for anything else haha. My one gtx already covers one pci slot and makes a very very tight fit for the latter. The other pci express slot would in turn block some other goodies like the front panel audio connector and front panel firewire, though I don't need them.
