Just gotta say... Lenovo sure can build a laptop... ThinkPad fans chime in

Just upgraded from a Dell Inspiron 17R to a Lenovo Thinkpad T510... All I gotta say is wow. Thing's built like a tank, keyboard is perfect, love the trackpoint (always have, from IBM days) and the graphics are so crisp they're making my eyes bleed.

Gone through countless T Series (back from IBM days), to Lenovo T Series, to now Lenovo X Series. I love Thinkpads! Currently have an X300 which had definitely taken a beating, but still running well. Going to finally replace it with an X220 in a few months.

I bought a Thinkpad T42 last summer on Craigslist for $120, bumped up the RAM to 2GB, got 2 new batteries, and a port replicator($15!), total damage was $200. A few years back I worked for a IBM Business Partner in Folsom and tried for years to get our sales staff Thinkpads. They are solidly built, and last almost forever. Mine has a Titanium inner frame and an accelerometer to detect any sudden movement, like falling, which stops the HDD!

Had a Thinkpad since Feb 2008 (from my old job). It has been on numerous plane trips, and carried home everyday from office to home and it is still working!

Pretty heavy duty units, in my opinion.

            I've worked with IBM/Lenovo laptops since 2001.

They had a few crappy batches and battery issues but overall they're decent.

X21 to X31 were tough. X40 and X41 had crappy hard drives. X60 and X61 had crappy batteries. It was during the time there was the scare of laptops literally catching fire.

X301 are discontinued and the ssd flash hard drives aren't that great. The SATA drives are more reliable. I speculate this series was a flop.

X200 have weak batteries and will die within a year.

T series are a tougher series but big and heavy which is expected since they're screens are larger. Those are work horses. The earlier T40 to T61 batteries won't last long either.

The casing for all of them are tough. They do crack but they'll rarely harm the motherboard or screen. My kid has knocked over several models of them and it's kept going.

My battery did go out in about 14 months and had to be replaced. The HD is looking a bit wobbly right now, time for a data backup!

Bad as in good, or bad as in bad because you admitted you don't know anything about hardware or software and anything would be just as bad in your hands?

I use a T400 for work, the thing is a tank. Dumped a soda into the keyboard once, the drain holes did their job and kept the board and rest of the components dry. As for the keyboard I just took it off and run it under the sink to keep the soda from getting the keys sticky.

I am typing this on a Thinkpad T42. Bought it in 2002 or 2003. I replaced the battery in 2008 or 2009. In 2010 I upgraded the memory from 512 to 1256 MB. Finally, late 2010 I added a 160 gig HDD.

This thing runs like a tank. It's light, the battery lasts forever, and to this day is my first and only personal laptop.

One stop shop. IBM made the best laptops IMO period.

I've been debating on getting the brick of an Alienware of a lenovo. I really like the design and far from being flashy like an Alienware they are quite simple and clean looking. For the price I know I should get the lenovo but have always just wanted the Alienware!

it takes ONE plane flight to realize how great a small laptop is.

I'm on a W500 and love it; never a problem and built like a tank. Definitely will get another in the future.

My company used all Lenovo Thinkpads for a couple of years. Three years later most are literally unusable. Blue screens for memory and motherboard problems. Blue screens while booting from windows discs. It was weird, almost all at once the laptops started dropping like flies. I won't be buying Lenovo again.

For reference, they were mostly models X60 and X200.

i remember when ibm sold off the line that is now lenovo.

it was an all chinese company.

that first year, there were so much FUD that i dont know if it was the state department or a big portion of the federal gov that refused to buy machines from them since they though the chinese had put in a BUG chip.

the chip would then call back to motherbase in china and reveal secrets and stuff...
