    tell me about security cameras

I want a security type camera that I can access over the web. The main use will be to check weather and how deep the snow is on the driveway. There is a wireless router and broadband internet available. I need some recommendations.

    Thanks

You will be unhappy with the performance of wireless; and you will need to run cabling to the camera's location for power. If you're looking at snow depth you may also need to take into account heating/dehumidifying.

I don't have a specific recommendation for your application - but I would think about getting a camera with a separate heated waterproof housing if this will be mounted outdoors and it's cold enough to get snow.

Also, be wary of built-in IR illumination - it attracts spiders who will build webs in front of the camera lens. Better to have a low-light camera that doesn't need IR, or a separate illuminator mounted a few feet away from the camera.

Easiest setup would be mounting an ip camera indoors, shooting out of a window that overlooks the driveway. This will minimize the mounting requirements and simplify cabling if you don't use wireless.
This doesn't look like a critical security application, so wireless might be an option.
If you use wired, you'll need a router with a built-in switch.
For your application, I suggest checking out Axis or Vivotek cameras.

Camera and lens selection will be determined by:
        • Distance of camera to target area.
        • Width and height of the target area.
        • Requirements for pixel density to meet your image resolution requirements.
        • Lighting conditions for the times you will view the camera.

The "Dropcam" looks like an AXIS M1011-W marketed with a different name and price markup. But it might be sufficient, depending on the distance, area of coverage, and lighting requirements.

So long as you have a good DSL or Cable internet connection (high band width) and a decent wifi router the wifi cameras do work pretty good. I bought one when they were few and relatively new on the market for $120 and it was stellar. It met all of my obligations. If you are measuring snow then you just need to shoot it at a measuring stick that is high enough for you to see no matter what - it won't be hard.

I use the wired Mace system for my house. They work well and can see pretty well with the infrared at night.
